 Hearts Win Apollo Conference Softball Contest, Newton Wins, Teutopolis, CHBC Drop Losses

Effingham and Mattoon got in the first game of an Apollo Conference softball doubleheader but not the second game Friday.

The Hearts won 5-3 in eight innings. EHS moved ahead 1-0 in the first and 2-0 in the third. Mattoon tied in the fourth. The two teams scored a run each in the seventh and were tied at 3-3 sending the game into the eighth. That’s where the Hearts took control, scoring two runs for the victory.

Effingham finished with six doubles in the game. Gieah Schlanser led the way with two doubles and two RBI while Keagyn Koenig added a single and double, Maci Hayes, Natalie Armstrong and Cora Hartmann had a double each.

Armstrong went the distance on the mound. She gave up three runs on eight hits, walked seven and struck out four.

At Mattoon

At Fairfield

Fairfield moved into a 1-0 lead in the second and the score stood tied with Newton at 2-2 in the third. But the Eagles came back with a four-run fifth and went on for a 7-5 victory.

Newton was outhit by a 12-8 count. Jacee Dhom led the way with a single, double and three RBI. Allie Hermann chipped in with a triple while Claire Probst had a double. Jorjia Reich had two singles and an RBI and Lexie Ghast a single and an RBI.

Emma Inyart was the winning pitcher in relief. She came on in the fourth inning and and went 3.1 innings giving up three runs on six hits and one walk.

At Teutopolis

Pinckneyville broke free after three scoreless innings and tallied four runs Friday to move ahead against Teutopolis. The Wooden Shoes could only muster one run to fall by a 4-1 tally.

The Wooden Shoes outhit Pinckneyville by a 5-3 count but committed three errors and gave up eight walks in the contest.

T-town’s Jersey Gaddis hit a solo homer while Chloe Hoene added a double.

At Cowden

Ramsey edged Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City in a Saturday contest, 5-4.

The two teams were tied at 1-1 after the first inning. CHBC moved ahead 2-1 in the third but Ramsey came back with three runs to lead 4-2. CHBC then tied the score in the fifth only to see Ramsey score what would prove to be the winning run in the sixth.

CHBC was led in hitting by Brylie Prater with two singles and two RBI. Allison Shields had three stolen bases.
