 Several Big-Ticket Street Improvement Projects Earmarked for Effingham in Coming Fiscal Year

A host of capital improvement projects are on the docket for the City of Effingham in the fiscal year that begins May 1.

The largest dollar value project is an IEPA unsewered grant project. The project is valued at $5,040,000.

The biggest ticket street project is the extension of Airport Road, west from US Route 45 valued at $3,395,000. The westerly extension is designed to open up the city-owned land from Route 45 to the CN Railroad for economic development.

The City is still budgeting $1.9 million for expansion of McGrath Avenue in the Effingham Business Park. The project is designed to open up expansion of Stevens Industries.

Also due for expansion and improvement is Merchant Street from Flamingo to Evergreen Avenues, valued at $1,190,000, and East Evergreen Avenue from Sherwood Forest to Oceola Streets, valued at $1,130,000. Others include a new box culvert for East Evergreen Avenue, valued at $860,000, and improvements to Cherry Street from Fayette Avenue, north to Jefferson Avenue, valued at $810,000. Already scheduled: East Evergreen Avenue, from Oceola to Willenborg Avenues, valued at $755,000, and design of Phase II of the Ford Avenue extension, valued at $695,000. Also, just under $1 million for reconstruction of Oak Point Drive, $1,450,000 for the extension of Santa Maria Avenue; $3.8 million for water and sewer line work related to the second phase of the Fayette Avenue reconstruction project; and $3.1 million for the 4th and Rickelman project including the roundabout.

In addition to street projects, $750,00o is being budgeted for replacement of the City’s Fire Training Center, and $635,000 for a storage building in Community Park to hold the Wonderland in Lights Christmas displays.

The City budget is to be approved on April 21 for the fiscal year that begins May 1.
