Effingham Plan Commission members this week decided to revisit the issue of vacation and short-term rental facilities in March.
A proposed text amendment in the City Zoning Ordinance would expand zoning districts that would be eligible for consideration of a vacation short term rental in non-urban and residential districts.
Other proposed changes include: no use of shipping containers, a limit on the number of special use permits, and a maximum number of guests in the residences.
At least three properties already being used in town stopped operation when contacted by the City. At least some of those operators would like to resume if permitted.
Plan Commission member Mark Thies had reservations about permitting the short-term rental facilities in residential districts. Thies said, “I have a problem with expanding in “R” districts. This is why we have motels. Churches, schools and parks are permitted in “R” districts.”
As proposed, the Plan Commission would review the applicants on a case-by-case basis.
