The Effingham City Plan Commission Tuesday approved the 2050 Comprehensive Plan.

As has been the case throughout the months of work on the plan, the focus returned to housing.

Brian Meyers is a Plan Commission member, and has been working on the PAVE organization as it involves housing. Meyers is a realtor and has been meeting with PAVE monthly for four years. He asked whether there is someone who is in charge of the housing process. Meyers didn’t get an answer to his question. That led to robust discussion of the housing issue.

The decision to approve the plan was accompanied by clarification on actions to take regarding housing. Local banker Mel Stock said he hasn’t seen any change regarding addressing housing needs and said the City has to be a part of the change.

The City Council will review the plan at its next meeting, with a vote on the measure coming in March.

We will return to this issue in future newscasts.

The Plan Commission approved a site plan for landfill upgrades at the Rumpke Landfill on East Route 33 including a maintenance building and an extension of pavement south across the railroad tracks. The Commission voted to continue discussion of a special use permit for short term rentals to their March meeting.
