 Effingham Claims Apollo Conference Title, Teutopolis, Cumberland, North Clay Win In Girls H.S. Basketball

Effingham High School is the Apollo Conference champions!

Coach Jeff Schafer’s crew defeated Mahomet-Seymour 63-47 in Apollo Conference girls play Friday and finished the season with a perfect 9-0 conference mark.

The Hearts ran out to a 17-8 first quarter lead as Alyssa Martin connected on three baskets for six points and McKenzie Love added five.

Mahomet-Seymour fought back with a 21-19 second period to trail 36-29 at halftime. Martin added five more points to her total for 11 by halftime. Tessa Raddatz and Ryley Engel hit a three-pointer each.

Martin continued on her run with two more baskets and three of three at the line for seven points in the third period as the Hearts led 52-37.

Engel added on five more points in the final quarter as the Hearts had a slight 11-10 edge.

Martin connected on eight field goals and four of five at the line for 20 points. She was the lone EHS player in double figures. Love added nine while Engel and Maci Hayes finished with eight each.

Effingham is now 25-3 on the season and is back in action Tuesday at Taylorville.

At Bloomington

Bloomington Cenral Catholic moved into a 7-3 opening quarter lead but that didn’t last long Friday.

T-town’s Anna Probst went to work, putting in two of two at the line, hitting a regular basket and two three-pointers for 10 of her team’s 23 points. Jersey Gaddis added five and the Shoes led 24-20 at halftime.

Probst continued on in the third quarter with a three-pointer and four of four at the line for seven points as the Shoes held a 39-33 lead going into the final period. The Shoes then finished with a 15-12 tally for the victory.

Probst hit four field goals, three of those from beyond the arc, and six of six at the line for 17 points. Sophia Martin added 10 and J. Gaddis nine.

Malea Helmink led T-town in rebounds with six.

At Newton

Cumberland came calling at Newton Saturday and claimed a 54-46 win.

The Pirates edged out to a 7-6 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 21-14 at halftime. Cumberland had a 33-32 second half as Newton mounted a comeback only to fall short.

Jude Miller led the way for the Pirates in scoring with 21 points on five field goals, one a three-pointer and 10 of 14 at the line. Alysa Dittamore added 18 points on eight field goals and two free throws. Also in double figures was Jade Carr with 10.

Newton was led by Allie Hermann with 10 points on three field goals and four of four at the line. Hermann also led in rebounds with eight.

The Eagles drop to 17-10 on the season and will host Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville tonight for Senior Night.
