Mount Zion came calling and Effingham High School sent the Braves home with a 62-49 Apollo Conference loss in girls basketball Tuesday evening.
The Hearts trailed Mount Zion by a slight 14-13 opening quarter edge. The Braves Gabby Wisher connected on three baskets and a free throw for seven points. The Hearts were led by Averie Wolfe with three baskets and a free throw, also for seven.
But the deficit didn’t last long. The Hearts started on an 18-11 second period run to lead 31-25 at halftime. Tessa Raddatz hit a three-pointer and two free throws while Ryley Engel and Drew Weis connected on a three-pointer each.
That run continued into the third quarter, this time around it was a 22-12 run and EHS led 53-37. Alyssa Martin went on a tear, hitting four baskets and two free throws for 10 points while Wolfe added on to her total with a three-pointer and two regular baskets for seven.
The Braves had a slight 12-9 final period.
Coach Jeff Schafer’s crew had three players finish in double digits. Raddatz led the way with 18 points on five field goals, four of those from long distance, and four of four at the line. Martin also tallied 18 points on seven field goals and four of seven at the line. Wolfe finished with 16 on six field goals, one from three-point range, and one free throw.
EHS remained unbeaten in the Apollo Conference with an 8-0 mark and stands at 24-3 overall. The Hearts are back in action Friday playing host to Mahomet-Seymour.

At Sandoval
Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City broke an 11-11 opening quarter tie with an 11-6 second quarter and went on for a 45-35 victory over Sandoval in non-conference action Tuesday.
The Bobcats’ Lena Bowlin put in a basket and two free throws while Carissa Wakefield had two baskets for four points each in that opening quarter run.
CHBC continued on with an 11-6 second period to lead 22-17 at halftime. Ethel Stuckemeyer took over the scoring duties with six points while Ryleigh Sarver hit a three-pointer.
The Bobcats had a 23-18 second half. Wakefield added on three more baskets in the final quarter to her total.
Three players scored 10 points each for the winners. Bowlin hit four baskets and two free throws while Stuckemeyer and Wakefield hit five field goals each.
CHBC is 5-18 on the season and back in action Thursday against Nokomis.

Brownstown/St. Elmo put together another victory as the Bombers continue on with an outstanding season.
BSE bounced South Central, 61-12. The Bombers ripped out to a 26-2 opening quarter lead as Dayana Haslett hit four baskets, one a three-pointer and three of three at the line for 12. Danika Ramsey scored eight while Madi Miller added five.
Miller continued on with four baskets, one a three-pointer, in the second period for nine points as the Bombers led 40-7.
Haslett finished with 21 points on eight field goals, two three-pointers and three of three at the line. On her 15th point of the game with 4:46 in the game, Haslett became the all-time leading scorer with 1,845 points.

Dieterich handed Oblong/Palestine/Hutsonville a 56-33 loss Tuesday evening.
Three players finished in double figures for the Maroons. Addison Miller connected on five field goals, four of those from three-point range, and was six of eight at the line for 20 points.
Claire Faller added 18 points on six field goals, one a three-pointer, and four of four at the line. Callie Faller finished with 14 points.
