 T-town Opens Stay at Salem Invitational With Victory, Newton Claims Win Over Dieterich In Regular Season Play

SALEM — Teutopolis High School opened play in the 74th Salem Invitational Boys Basketball Tournament with a victory Thursday evening.

The Wooden Shoes handed Carbondale a 65-56 loss despite the fact Carbondale ran out to a 17-7 opening quarter lead.

Five players scored for the Terriers in the quarter.

But Coach Chet Reeder’s crew didn’t give up. The Wooden Shoes barrelled back with a 21-8 second period to move into a 28-25 halftime lead.

Landyn Thoele hit three baskets and a free throw for seven points while Isaac McWhorter and Gavin Addis nailed a three-pointer each.

T-town then continued on with a 23-15 third quarter for a 51-40 lead. Jake Probst, who hadn’t scored in the first half, nailed a three and was three of three at the line for six points. Joey Probst tallied five points and Gavin Buening hit a three-pointer. L. Thoele added five more points.

Carbondale had a 16-14 final period.

L. Thoele led the way with 16 points on seven field goals and two of two at the line. Addis finished with 14 on five field goals, two from beyond the arc, and two of five at the line. J. Probst scored 11.

Mount Vernon was an 86-31 winner over Gateway Legacy in the second game of the evening.

Today’s games include Carbondale vs. Gateway Legacy at 4 p.m. followed by Champaign Central vs. Salem at 5:30. Centralia takes on Mattoon at 7 and Teutopolis meets Mount Vernon at 8:30.

Tomorrow’s games are consolation championship at 9 a.m., third place game at 10:30 and the championship game at noon. There will be no seventh place game.

At Dieterich

Newton moved into a 16-4 opening quarter lead on Dieterich and went on for a 56-40 victory in a non-conference matchup Thursday evening.

The Eagles’ Drake Wolf hit a basket and three free throws for five points while Hayden Mulvey also tallied five on a regular basket and a three-pointer.

Dieterich then came back with a slight 13-10 second quarter to pull within 26-17 at halftime. Gavin Niemerg scored five points on a regular basket and a three. Two other players hit from beyond the arc, Brock Niemerg and Ezra Cook put in a three each.

The two teams played to an 11-11 third quarter before Newton went on a 19-12 final period run.

Kody Bergbower led the way for the Eagles with 12 points, hitting seven of eight free throws in the final period. H. Mulvey finished with 11 and D. Wolf 10.

Dieterich was led by Brock Niemerg with 17 points on five field goals, two from three-point range, and five of nine free throws. Cook finished with 12.
