John Robert “JB” Jones, a cherished soul and beacon of joy, passed away on Sunday, January 11, 2026, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, at the age of 81, surrounded by the love of family.

Born on November 9, 1944, in Decatur, Illinois, JB was the loving son of John and Mary Jones and grew up in Windsor, Illinois. His life was a testament to service, love, and laughter, a legacy that will continue to warm the hearts of all who knew him. A proud graduate of Windsor High School in 1962, JB excelled in both sports and theatre, showcasing his diverse talents and vibrant personality. He carried this zest for life into his studies at Eastern Illinois University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 1966. His dedication to his country was unwavering, as evidenced by his honorable service as a pilot in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, flying the P-3C Orion over the Bay of Tonkin. Following his active duty, JB joined the Navy Reserves, a
commitment he upheld alongside his pursuit of a master’s degree in business at Eastern Illinois University. JB’s professional career was marked by his role as an investigator and flight check assessor with the Federal Aviation Administration, a position he held with distinction until his retirement as Captain from the Navy in 1994. His expertise was sought long after retirement, leading him to consult for the FAA and share his wealth of knowledge and experience.

Family was the cornerstone of JB’s life. He married his beloved wife, Ann L. Acton, on New Year’s Eve of 1966, and together they created a loving home for their children, Kimberly and Christopher. JB’s role as a grandfather to Samantha, Caeley, Christopher, and Thomas, and as a great-grandfather to Mila and Maeve, was one he cherished deeply. His love and guidance were the family’s compass, and his absence will leave an immeasurable void.

Preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary Jones, and his sister, Shari Nichols, JB’s spirit of generosity and his capacity for love continue to live on through his family and the countless lives he touched. A man of faith, JB was actively involved in his church, the First United Methodist Church of Arlington Heights, where he contributed his time and spirit to various activities. His interests were as vast as the universe he loved to learn about. A fan of music, sci-fi, and classic cars, JB’s hobbies also included reading, golfing, and sharing ghost stories. Known for his humor, kindness, and intelligence, he could often be found dancing like a goofball, playing pranks, and offering guidance and support to many. JB’s legacy is one of joy and love, with cherished memories created during holidays, family trips, and summer vacations. His presence was a gift, and his influence will be felt for generations to come.
