Effingham St. Anthony ran out to a 20-8 opening quarter lead on Salem and finished with a 56-38 girls high school basketball victory Monday evening.

The Bulldogs moved ahead 20-8 behind Nancy Ruholl’s three baskets and three free throws for nine points. Lilly Gannaway added a three-pointer and Jackie Vonderheide four points.

St. Anthony had a 14-8 second quarter to lead 34-16 at halftime. Ruholl and Gannaway added on five more points each while Julia Schultz contributed four.

Salem played the Bulldogs even in the second half with a 22-22 count but couldn’t overcome that first half run.

Ruholl finished with 17 points on six field goals and five of six at the line. Gannaway added 15 on six field goals, two of those three-pointers, and one of one at the line.

Gannaway finished with six assists and four steals adding to her total stats for the evening while Ali Kollman led in rebounds with five and Ruholl had four assists.

St. Anthony improved to 12-6 overall.

Salem won the junior varsity game, 29-24. St. Anthony was led by Julia Schultz with 19.

At Altamont

Cumberland came to town, took a 23-14 opening quarter lead, and went on to beat Altamont by a 68-47 count Monday evening.

The Pirates’ Jude Miller connected on six field goals in that opening quarter run, one a three-pointer, for 11 of her team’s 23 points. Alysa Dittamore chipped in with six.

Altamont’s Alyssa Ruholl put in three baskets for six points and Reagan Kuenstler and Ella Nelson added a three-pointer each.

The lead went to 43-22 at halftime. Dittamore went to work with three baskets and three free throws for nine points while Jade Carr and Raegan Jones hit a three-pointer each.

Miller put in six of six from the free throw line and a basket in the third quarter 12-11 edge. She then finished with all 13 of her team’s final quarter points to tally 36 for the game. Miller hit 13 field goals, three from beyond the arc, and seven of eight at the line for a career high. Her former career high was 31 set last year.

Dittamore finished with 19 on six baskets and seven of 12 at the line. Dittamore has a total of 961 points for her career while Miller stands at 923.

Altamont dropped to 9-8 on the season and returns to action Thursday against Brownstown/St. Elmo.

Altamont fell to Teutopolis in freshman/sophomore action, 47-39.

The Wooden Shoes continued on and finished with a 64-45 victory Monday evening.

Probst finished with 16 points on four field goals, three from beyond the arc, and five of seven at the line. Niemerg tallied 15 on seven field goals, one a three-pointer.

Malea Helmink and Niemerg led the Shoes in rebounding with five each.

Dieterich took a 12-4 opening quarter lead and went on for a 47-30 victory over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg as two National Trail Conference teams met Monday evening.

The Maroons moved into a 12-4 opening quarter lead and led 26-17 at halftime. Dieterich had a 13-4 third quarter.

Callie Faller led in scoring with 13 points on three field goals and seven of 10 at the line. Addison Miller added 11 points.

Lena Goebel led the Maroons in rebounds with 15 and steals with five. Addison MIller had three blocked shots.

There was no scoring listed for Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg.

At Cowden

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City picked up a 33-21 victory over North Clay in National Trail Conference action Monday evening.

The Bobcats moved into a 16-5 opening quarter lead as Lena Bowlin hit for six points while Ethel Stuckemeyer and Carissa Wakefield had four points each.

The lead stood at 24-12 at halftime. The two teams hit a basket each in the third quarter as CHBC led 26-14.

Both teams then scored seven points in the final period.

CHBC was led by Bowlin with 11 points on three field goals and five free throws. The Bobcats dropped to 3-13 on the season and are back in action Wednesday at Macon.

North Clay was led by Clara Hagen with six points.

At Newton

Newton played host to Mount Carmel and the Golden Aces went home with a 73-55 win Monday evening.

The Eagles held a 23-18 first quarter lead and pushed that to 44-26 at halftime.

Newton’s Izzy Meinhart led three players in double figures. Meinhart connected on seven field goals, six from three-point range, to tally 20. Alani Bergbower and Allie Hermann added 14 points each.

Claire Probst led the team in rebounds with seven and assists with four. Bergbower also had four assists and three steals. Bergbower finished with four assists and three steals.

Newton drops to 12-7 on the season and is back in action Thursday playing host to Shelbyville.

Newton won the junior varsity game, 24-18. Brooke Gentry led with 13 points as the JV improved to 5-6 on the season.

Pana came calling and claimed a 54-44 victory over Neoga in a game played at Lake Land College Monday evening.

The Panthers edged out to a 12-8 opening quarter lead but Neoga came back to tie the score at 21-21 at halftime.

Pana then moved ahead with a 19-13 third quarter and finished out with a 14-10 final period.

Laker led Pana with 21 points while Cox added 18.

Neoga was led by Molly Moran and Keeli McKay with 10 points each. Moran hit four field goals and was two of two at the line while McKay connected on five field goals.

Neoga falls to 6-12 on the season and will play host to St. Anthony Thursday at Lake Land College.

Pana won the junior varsity game, 45-35.
