 St. Anthony Handles Olney, Cumberland Beats N. Clay, South Central Wins In Boys Basketball

Effingham St. Anthony shot 50 percent from the field and 61.5 percent at the free throw line in downing Olney, 56-24 Tuesday evening in high school boys basketball in a game heard on 979XFM.

The Bulldogs took charge early with a 20-6 opening quarter run, knocking in seven of 13 from the field and four of six at the free throw line.

Miles Waldhoff connected on two regular field goals and a three-pointer for seven points while Freddie Jansen added two baskets and was two of two at the line for six. Will Bierman also nailed five points.

St. Anthony finished the half hitting 57.1 percent from the field and 66.7 percent from the free throw line. That was another 20 points for a 40-11 halftime lead. Gabe Looman put in six points while three other players tallied four points each.

In the third quarter, the Bulldogs added on 14 more points. Keenan Griffith and Waldhoff tallied five each in that quarter.

Only one player finished in double figures for the Bulldogs but nine total players scored in the contest.

Waldhoff hit seven field goals, two from beyond the arc, for 16 points. Griffith added nine and Looman finished with seven.

The Bulldogs had only five turnovers in the game while Olney coughed up the ball 17 times. The Tigers could muster only 19 percent from the field on eight of 42 shots.

St. Anthony improved to 6-4 while Olney dropped to 5-7.

In the junior varsity game, the Bulldogs nabbed a 59-40 victory.

Three players hit double digits. Conner Storm led the way with 18 points while Cooper Sehy added 11 and Alex Mayer 10.

In freshman/sophomore play, St. Anthony was a 47-39 winner.

Logan Gowin led the way with 13 points while Camden Bloemer added 11 for the Bulldogs.

At Toledo

Cumberland played host to North Clay and captured a 71-65 victory Tuesday evening.

The opening quarter rained three’s as Cumberland connected on five to move into a 21-16 lead.

Chase Stewart hit three of those while Cameron Roedl put in two.

North Clay’s Mason Byers kept the Cardinals close, scoring five points.

North Clay fought back in the second quarter with an 18-14 run to pull within 35-34 at halftime. Carder Walden nailed two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight while Kailen Atwood hit a three-pointer and a regular basket for five.

The Cardinals moved into a 50-47 lead in the third quarter as Lucas Griffy and Byers tallied four points each.

But Cumberland went on a final quarter tear. Kaleb Bierman hit four baskets for eight while Stewart put in two more three-pointers. Reed Miller and Roedl connected on a basket and two free throws each and the Pirates picked up the victory.

Four players hit double figures for the Pirates. Stewart hit six three-pointers for 18 points while Roedl put in 15, Zack Harmon 11 and Venatta 10.

The Cardinals were also led by four players in double figures. Byers hit four field goals and was nine of nine at the line for 17 points while Walden and Atwood tallied 14 each and Griffy totaled 11.

In the junior varsity game, North Clay was a 59-36 winner.

At Farina

South Central handed Sandoval a 69-52 loss in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening.

The Cougars held a 19-14 opening quarter lead. Westin Neilson tallied 11 points in that period, connecting on three from beyond the arc and a regular basket. Hudson Moore chipped in with eight on three baskets and two free throws.

Neilson continued on with his hot scoring by connecting on 12 of the second quarter 13 points and the Cougars led 32-24 at halftime. Neilson put in two three-pointers and regular basket and was four of four at the line.

South Central had a 13-10 third period and finished as Eli Hiestand and Hudson Moore added five each.

Neilson was the big scorer for the Cougars with 36 points. He connected on 12 field goals, eight of those from three-point range, and was four of four at the line. Also in double figures was Hudson Moore with 17.
