 Cumberland Wins St. Elmo Holiday Tourney Title, North Clay Second At Conrad Allen Tournament

Cumberland won the championship of the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament.

ST. ELMO — Cumberland High School captured the championship of the 65th Annual St. Elmo Holiday Boys Basketball Tournament Saturday.

In Friday games, Patoka/Odin won over Ramsey 62-37 while Cumberland downed St. Elmo/Brownstown, 74-43.

The Pirates ran out to a 21-7 opening quarter lead on SEB. Cameron Roedl connected on three from beyond the arc and a two for 11 points in the quarter. Reed Miller hit a three and a two for five points and Chase Stewart knocked in a three-pointer.

Stewart continued on with his three-pointers as he hit four in the second quarter and tallied 14 points. Roedl added a three. The Pirates connected on 14 three-pointers in the contest.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Jayden Hughett with 23 on eight field goals, one a three-pointer, and six of seven at the line.

In Saturday’s games, Mulberry Grove claimed seventh-place with a 62-46 win over Ramsey.

Patoka/Odin defeated Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 57-46 to win the consolation championship.

Patoka/Odin moved into a 15-4 opening quarter lead and led 28-16 at halftime. CHBC came back with a 15-11 third period but Patoka/Odin had a 16-15 final quarter.

CHBC was led by Griffin Vaughn with 14 points on five baskets and four of eight at the line. Also in double figures was Remington Howell with 12.

In the third place contest, Hillsboro was a 59-46 winner over St. Elmo/Brownstown.

St. Elmo/Brownstown was led by Benji Lowe and Bentley Sanders with 15 points each. Lowe hit seven field goals, one a three-pointer, while Sanders connected on five field goals and five free throws.

In the championship, Cumberland ran out to a 20-10 opening quarter lead and handed Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg a 71-44 loss.

The Pirates had a 25-15 second quarter run to lead 45-25 at halftime. Miller led the way with nine field goals and four of seven from the line for 22 points. Stewart chipped in with six three-pointers for 18 points while Roedl added four field goals and two of two at the line for 15.

Windsor/Stew-Stras had one player in double figures, Wyatt Wetherell with five field goals, one a three-pointer, and seven of eight at the line for 18.

Named to the First All-Tournament Team were Chase Stewart (Cumberland) who was named the Most Valuable Player, Wyatt Wetherell (Windsor/Stew-Stras), Reed Miller (Cumberland), Tony White (Hillsboro) and Cameron Roedl (Cumberland).

Named to the Second All-Tournament Team were Lincoln Robert (Patoka-Odin), Brody Bible (Windsor/Stew-Stras), Kody Burks (Patoka-Odin), Griffin Vaughn (Cowden-Herrick-Beecher City) and Hagan Henrichsmeyer (Mulberry Grove).

The Defense Award went to Reed Miller (Cumberland).

Cheerleading awards went to St. Elmo/Brownstown first place and Cumberland second place.

At Wayne City

North Clay finished second at the Conrad Allen Tournament Saturday.

In Friday’s games, North Clay was a 70-50 winner over Edwards County and Webber Township defeated Wayne City 86-45.

In Saturday’s play. Webber Township won over North Clay in the title contest, 79-73.

Third place went to Edwards County over Wayne City 58-53.

Thompsonville won over Crab Orchard, 47-40 in the fifth place game.

The seventh-place game went to Cisne who edged Grayville, 59-58.
