 Dieterich, Newton, Teutopolis Claim Boys Basketball Victories, WSS, Cumberland, South Central Fall

DIETERICH — Three players scored in double figures as Dieterich High School handed Neoga a 67-41 loss as two National Trail Conference teams met Tuesday evening in boys basketball.

Dieterich edged out to a 16-12 opening quarter lead. Jackson Icenogle connected on a regular basket, a three-pointer and was one of two at the line for six points. Ezra Cook chipped in with four points and Brock Niemerg had three.

Three players scored four points each for Neoga. Haarman hit a three-pointer and a free throw while Evan Fearday had two baskets and Ray a basket and two free throws.

The Movin’ Maroons then went on a 13-5 second period run to lead 29-17 at halftime. Cook added five more points to his total and Niemerg four.

The lead ballooned to 45-25 in the third period and Dieterich finished with a 22-6 final quarter run.

Niemerg led the offensive attack with nine field goals, one a three-pointer, and was four of five at th line for 23 points. Also in double figures were Icenogle with 14 and Bryce Bohnhoff with 10.

Neoga was led by Brayden Ray with 11.

At Newton

Newton edged out to a 10-9 lead on Altamont and went on for a 55-45 victory Tuesday evening.

The Eagles pushed the lead to 30-15 at halftime. Kody Bergbower connected on three baskets and four free throws for 10 in the quarter while Jacob Oldham added six.

Those two Eagles players finished with double figures. Bergbower led the way with six field goals and five of nine at the line for 17. Oldham hit five field goals for 10 points.

Drake Wolf led in rebounds with six while Oldham pulled down three.

Altamont was led by Zaine Miller with 13 points. He had four field goals, one from beyond the arc, and four of six at the line. Kade Milleville added 11.

The Indians dropped to 3-2 on the season and will be back in action against South Central Friday.

At Paris

Teutopolis took the early lead and never looked back in a 53-26 win over Paris Tuesday evening.

The Wooden Shoes moved ahead 14-4 in the opening quarter. Jake Probst scored five and Jason Kreke four. The Shoes pushed that lead to 30-10 at halftime. Gavin Buening scored on a three-pointer and regular basket for five while Isaac McWhorter added four and Gavin Addis put in a three-pointer.

Eleven players scored for the Shoes. Kreke was the lone player in double figures with 10.

The Shoes improved to 5-1 on the season while Paris dropped to 3-3. T-town is back in action Friday hosting BCC.

Teutopolis was a 72-42 winner in junior varsity action. T-town was led by Jake Probst with 14 and Jake Kocher with 10.

At Arcola

Arcola played host to Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg and claimed a 45-37 victory.

Arcola moved into an 11-9 opening quarter lead and pushed that to 23-13 at halftime.

The Hatchets came back with an 11-8 third period but Arcola got back on track in the final quarter with a 14-13 edge.

Wetherell and Vonderheide scored 11 points each for the Hatchets. Wetherell hit four field goals, two of those three-pointers, and one of four at the line. Vonderheide finished with three field goals and five of nine at the line.

Windsor/Stew-Stras is now 4-3 on the season and back in action Friday at Shelbyville.

The Hatchets won the junior varsity contest, 40-21.

Casey-Westfield edged into a 13-11 opening quarter lead on Cumberland and finished with a 44-39 victory Thursday.

The Warriors led 20-17 at halftime. Casey-Westfield then held off the Pirates by a 24-22 second half count.

Cumberland was led by Reed Miller with 11 points on four field goals, one a three-pointer.

At Vandalia

Vandalia’s Qwentyn Stombaugh scored 30 points as the Vandals handed South Central a 69-40 loss in a non-conference matchup Tuesday evening.

The Vandals took a 14-11 opening quarter lead as Stombaugh scored 11 in the period. They moved the lead to 29-19 at halftime.

Vandalia then had a 21-13 third quarter and finished with a 19-8 final period.

The Vandals are now 3-2 on the season. South Central dropped to 2-4 and is back in action Friday at Altamont.
