Effingham High School played host to Highland in girls basketball action Monday evening and sent the visitors home with a 55-43 nonconference loss.

The Hearts ran out to a 15-5 opening quarter lead as Averie Wolf hit two baskets and a free throw for five while McKenzie Love added four points.

Alyssa Martin took over in the second quarter, scoring three baskets for six points while Wolfe knocked in a three-pointer and the Hearts led 28-12.

Martin then went on a third quarter tear, hitting four baskets and a free throw for nine of the Hearts’ 17 points. Tessa Raddatz, who hadn’t scored in the opening half, nailed a three-pointer and a free throw. Maci Hayes chipped in with four points and the Hearts led 45-30.

Martin scored six points in the final quarter and the Hearts hit six of eight total free throws.

Finishing with 24 points, Martin led the way with 10 field goals and was four of six at the line. It was even scoring then in the rest of the lineup as Wolfe tallied nine, Hayes eight and Raddatz seven.

At Brownstown

Brownstown/St. Elmo knocked down another opponent, this time Martinsville by a 50-15 count Monday evening.

BSE opened with a 16-4 run in the first quarter. Dayana Haslett scored six points while Madi Miller added five.

The lead went to 38-6 at halftime. Haslett hit two three-pointers and three regular baskets for 12. Presley Williams added six.

BSE had a 10-7 third period as Miller added six points and finished out with a two-point final period.

Haslett led the way with 21 points on nine field goals, two from beyond the arc. She hit one free throw.

Also in double figures was Miller with 13 on six field goals and one of one at the line.

In junior varsity, Brownstown/St. Elmo edged Martinsville, 12-11. Sierra Mason led the winners with three points.

At Farina

Neoga took the opening quarter lead and finished with a 44-37 victory in National Trail Conference play over South Central Monday evening.

Neoga edged out to a 13-11 lead and led 20-19 at halftime. The score continued to be close as Neoga went into the final quarter with a 31-29 lead then finished with a 13-8 final period run.

Mabry Henderson guided the Indians with 18 points on six field goals and three of four at the line.

South Central was led by Kennah Hiestand with 12 points on five field goals and two of two at the line.

Neoga improved to 3-3 overall and will play host to Tri-County at LLC today.

At Dieterich

Dieterich handed North Clay a 47-21 loss as the two National Trail Conference teams met Monday evening.

The Movin’ Maroons edged out to a 17-11 opening quarter and led 28-14 at halftime.

Dieterich then went on a run, outdistancing North Clay 15-2 in the third period.

Addison Miller was the leading scorer with 23 points on seven field goals, three from beyond the arc, and six of eight at the line.

Miller also led in rebounds with seven and had two blocked shots.

Lena Goebel led Dieterich in steals with seven. Callie Faller had three assists. Cassidy Goebel pulled down six boards.

Cumberland ran out to a big 28-3 opening quarter lead on Arthur-Lovington/Atwood-Hammond and went on for a 57-31 victory Monday evening.

The Pirates’ Alysa Dittamore connected on 18 of her team’s 28 opening quarter points. She hit eight of eight from the field and was two of two at the line. She finished with 26 points on 12 field goals and two free throws.

Also in double figures was Jude Miller with 18 on six field goals, four of those from three-point range, and two of two at the line.

The Rams moved into a 13-8 opening quarter lead and led 29-14 at halftime.

Tailyn Hancock led the winners with 17 points while Kenzie Jones added 15.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City was led by Lena Bowlin with 14 points on five field goals and four of eight at the line.

At Albion

Newton traveled to Albion to face Edwards County and fell 62-51 Monday evening.

The Eagles held a 19-13 opening quarter lead and led 30-26 at halftime.

But Edwards County came back with a 24-12 third period and finished with a 12-9 final quarter for the win.

Newton was led by Alani Bergbower with 13 points on four field goals and five of six at the line while Grace Schumacher added 12, Allie Hermann 11 and Izzy Meinhart 11.

Hermann led in rebounds with 10. Claire Probst had three assists.

Newton dropped to 4-3 and will be back in action Thursday against Robinson in a conference game.

Edwards County edged Newton 17-16 in the junior varsity contest. Maddie Brummer led the Eagles with eight points. The JV is now 1-3 on the season.
