 T-town Coach Laurie Thompson Earns 500th Career Coaching Victory, Girls Basketball Roundup

Coach Laurie Thompson (far right) and her Teutopolis High School girls basketball team picked up a victory that proved to be her 500th career coaching win by beating Olney Saturday.

OLNEY — Teutopolis High School girls basketball Coach Laurie Thompson earned her 500th career victory Saturday as her Wooden Shoes defeated Olney, Richland County 46-34.

T-town and Olney were tied at 6-6 in the opening quarter as Kelsey Niemerg put in two baskets. Niemerg connected on a three-pointer and another regular basket in the second period as the Shoes edged ahead 15-13 at halftime.

T-town then came out and went on a 19-5 third period run to put the game away. Malea Helmink hit two baskets and two free throws for six points while Niemerg added on four more points and Anna Probst hit a three-pointer and a free throw for five. Allie Ruholl also knocked in a three-pointer.

T-town then connected on its free throws in the final period as An. Probst and Gaddis put in four of six each and Helmink added two.

Niemerg tallied 13 points on five field goals, one from three-point range, and two of two at the line while An. Probst added 10.

Niemerg led in rebounds with 11 while Helmink added 10. J. Gaddis and Kelsey Niemerg had two steals each.

Thompson is now the only coach in the state of Illinois to have 500 wins after taking over the program from another coach, Dennis Koester, with 500 wins.

Thompson will be honored at the Wooden Shoes next home contest, Monday, December 15 as Effingham St. Anthony comes calling. The game will be heard on KJ Country 102.3.

At Brownstown

Brownstown/St. Elmo ran up some big numbers in handing Webber Township a 62-30 loss during the weekend.

The Bombers ran out to a 22-8 opening quarter lead as Dayana Haslett hit three regular baskets and a three-pointer for nine points while Presley Williams added a basket and four free throws for six.

Haslett continued on for five more baskets in the second quarter for 10 as the Bombers held a 44-10 halftime lead.

Haslett finished with 25 points on 12 field goals, one a three-pointer. Also in double figures was Williams with 13 on three field goals and seven of 10 at the line, and Danika Ramsey with three trifectas and two free throws for 11.

BSE fell to Pana, 31-28 in junior varsity play. Audria Logue led BSE with 14 points.

In a Friday varsity contest, Brownstown/St. Elmo won over Dieterich, 62-37.

BSE held a 32-13 halftime lead and never looked back. No other information was provided.

Dieterich was led by Addison Miller with 17 points, four rebounds, four assists and one blocked shot. Lena Goebel also had four assists and led in steals with four.

Brownstown/St. Elmo had 20 rebounds.

At Neoga

Georgetown Ridge Farm came calling and captured a 31-20 victory over Neoga Saturday.

GRF ran out to an 11-3 opening quarter lead and led 16-7 at halftime then had a 10-6 third quarter run.

Neoga was led in scoring by Malory Henderson and Madi Frankie with six points each.

The Indians drop to 2-3 on the season and will return to action today, traveling to South Central for National Trail Conference action.
