Effingham St. Anthony played host to Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg in a National Trail Conference girls high school basketball contest Thursday evening in a game head on KJ Country 102.3.
The Bulldogs ran out to a 16-3 opening quarter lead as Nancy Ruholl connected on three baskets and was three of four at the line for nine points while Jackie Vonderheide chipped in with five points.
Ruholl continued on with seven points in the second quarter as the Bulldogs held a 32-13 halftime time.
Windsor/Stew-Stras then played the Bulldogs even in the third period as Kendra Hayes went on a 10-point run for the Hatchets. Hayes connected on three baskets and was four of six at the line.
The Hatchets pulled within 49-30. But St. Anthony got back on track with a 19-10 final quarter. Ruholl added on eight more points while Lilly Gannaway connected on two baskets and Ali Kollmann hit a basket and a free throw.
Ruholl finished with 36 points, hitting 11 field goals, four of those from three-point range, and was 10 of 11 at the line. She pulled down nine rebounds and had seven assists.
Also in double figures for the Bulldogs was Vonderheide with 11 on five field goals, one a three-pointer. Gannaway had five assists. Aly Kollman had five rebounds.
Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Hayes with 21 points on six field goals, two from beyond the arc, and seven of 10 free throws.
The Bulldogs hit 40 percent from the field and 80 percent at the free throw line. They had 28 rebounds compared to 18 for the Hatchets.
St. Anthony is now 2-0 in the National Trail Conference and 5-2 overall.
The Hatchets did outshine the Bulldogs from three-point range, connecting on three of six for 50 percent while St. Anthony was two of nine for 22 percent.

At Effingham
Effingham High School played host to Charleston and sent the Trojans on their way with a 73-33 Apollo Conference loss Thursday evening.
The Hearts ran out to a 27-9 opening quarter lead. Averie Wolfe connected on three baskets that included two three-pointers, and hit a free throw for nine in the quarter while Alyssa Martin scored seven and Maci Hayes hit a three-pointer.
Martin and Wolfe tallied six points each in the second period 20-13 run. The Hearts put in six of six from the free throw line and led 47-22 at halftime.
EHS had a 20-6 third period run. Wolfe knocked down two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight while McKenzie Love hit three of three from the free throw line and a basket for five. Tessa Raddatz added a three-pointer.
Three players finished in double digits for the Hearts. Wolfe led the way with 23 on nine field goals, four from three-point range, and one of two at the line. Martin added 17 and Love finished with 13.
EHS is now 2-0 in the conference, 7-1 overall.
The Trojans were led by Sadie Phillips with 18 points.
