 N. Clay, Dieterich Win Openers At Cumberland, SEB Coach Feezel Earns 300th Career Win At M. Grove, WSS, CHBC Play At Cerro Gordo

TOLEDO — North Clay opened play at the Cumberland Boys Turkey Tournament with a 60-48 win over Vandalia.

The Cardinals edged out to a 17-13 opening quarter lead as Carder Walden connected on two three-pointers and a regular basket for eight points.

Vandalia then went on a 23-18 second period run to lead by a point at halftime, 36-35. Lucas Bower scored eight points while Andrew Casey added seven and Qwentyn Stombaugh six.

But North Clay came back strong in the third quarter. The Cardinals put together a 19-point offense while holding the Vandals to only six points. Kade Atwood knocked in three baskets and was two of two at the line for eight points.

Both teams finished out with six points in the final quarter.

Four players hit double digits for the Cardinals. Cody Zimdars led the way with 15 points on four field goals and seven of 10 at the line. Lucas Griffey chipped in with 14 while Atwood and Walden added 13 each.

In the second contest, Dieterich edged Marshall by a 41-39 tally.

It was an exciting end to the contest. Dieterich, which led by as many as 10 in the second half, won the game on a buzzer-beating three-pointer from  Ezra Cook.

The Movin’ Maroons had a 14-13 opening quarter lead behind Ezra Cook’s nine points.  That lead went to 24-20 at halftime. Bryce Bohnhoff took over the scoring in the second period with five points.

Dieterich had pushed its lead to seven points after the third quarter. But, here came Marshall. The Lions’ Payton McGuire, who had led through the first three quarters, scoring 15 points, went on a run, knocking in a basket and two three-pointers for eight.

That set up the dramatic final. Cook, who had 11 points coming into the final period, knocked in a basket and then hit his dramatic three-pointer for the win.

Cook led the way with 16 points on six field goals, two of those three-pointers, and two of three at the line. Also in double figures were Brock Niemerg and Bohnhoff with 11 each.

Marshall was led in scoring by McGuire with 23 points on eight field goals, four of those from beyond the arc  and three of four at the line.

At Mulberry Grove

St. Elmo/Brownstown put together a 74-55 victory over Lebanon in opening round play of the Mulberry Grove Turkey Tournament Monday evening.

The Eagles jumped out to a 20-12 opening quarter lead but Lebanon came back to pull within 38-31 at halftime.

The Eagles moved into a 59-47 lead at the end of the third quarter and then went on for the victory.

Along with winning the contest, the big news was that SEB Coach Greg Feezel earned his 300th career victory.

Graidon Wilhour led the way with 21 points while Benji Lowe added 19 and Jayden Hughett 18. Lowe led in rebounds with 12. Wilhour had five assists. Bentley Sanders had one blocked shot.

In the second contest, South Central suffered a 56-24 loss to Maryville Christian.

Maryville Christian ran out to an 18-8 opening quarter lead and led 36-8 at halftime. Maryville Christian had a 20-16 second half.

Hudson Moore and Brock Sigrist scored six points each for the Cougars.

In the third contest of the evening, Father McGivney was a 70-45 winner over Mulberry Grove.

In action today, Father McGivney meets Lebanon at 5:15 p.m., Maryville Christian takes on Mount Olive at 6:45 and South Central faces Ramsey at 8:15.

At Cerro Gordo

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg tallied an 84-70 victory over Argenta-Oreana in the Cerro Gordo Tournament Monday evening.

Argenta-Oreana moved into a 20-16 first quarter lead but WSS came back with a 25-19 second period to lead 41-39 at halftime.

The Hatchets then had a 43-32 second half run.

Four players hit double figures for the Hatchets. Wetherell led the way with 25 points while McDaniel added 17, Bible 14 and Rincker 13. The Hatchets had 11 three-pointers led by Wetherell with four and McDaniel and Rincker with three each.

University Christian handed Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City a 69-26 loss in the opening game at the junior high school.

Unity Christian stepped out to a 15-2 opening quarter lead and led 35-12 at halftime.

CHBC was led in scoring by Vaughn with seven points.

In the opening contest at the high school, Warrensburg-Latham defeated St. Thomas 68-49 while Le Roy won over Cerro Gordo-Bement 55-31.

In tonight’s games, Heritage goes against Argenta-Oreana at 6 p.m. followed by Unity Christian against Heyworth at 7:30 p.m. at the high school.

At the junior high, University High meets Hartsburg-Emden at 6 p.m. followed by Fisher taking on Warrensburg-Latham at 7:30.
