The Effingham County Board Legislative Committee Monday discussed re-structuring the committees of the Board and perhaps lessening the number of committees.
The business of the Board is driven by committee meetings, leaving minimal discussion of County business at the general Board meeting. County Board Chairman Josh Douthit suggested that the number of committees could be reduced from eight to six, or even five. Douthit said the action would reduce the commitment of board members at a time when it’s difficult securing enough of them.
The matter is to be considered again at next Monday’s board meeting.
The Board also voted to move ahead with an initiative of Board member Jeremy Deters. He’d like a ballot issue that when matters are preventing those in harm’s way from getting paid that legislators don’t get paid, either. The matter would be non-binding until 38 states ratify the measure.
Committee members met in closed session to discuss contract talks with sheriff’s personnel. There was no open session action. Sheriff Paul Kuhns said contract talks have been “pointed, serious, but amicable”.
