The opening round of the National Trail Conference Eighth-Grade Girls Basketball Tournament got underway Tuesday evening at Beecher City.

Brownstown/St. Elmo defeated Cumberland 27-4. BSE held Cumberland scoreless while taking a 13-0 lead in the first half.

Baya Tompkins led the winners with 12 points while Kara Stone added seven.

Cumberland was led by Paige Wolke and Lilly McMechan with two each.

In the second game, Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg edged Altamont 25-23.

WSS held a 13-9 halftime lead. Altamont came back with a 14-12 second half but fell short.

Maddy Manhart led WSS with eight points.

Altamont was led by Teegan Burrus with 10.

In the final game of the evening, South Central downed Effingham Sacred Heart, 35-19.

South Central ran out to a 19-8 opening half lead and went on for a 16-11 second half.

Skylar Webste led the way in scoring with 12 points while Claire Chasteen added 11.

Sacred Heart was led by Margo Chojnicki with 11.

The tournament continues tonight as Dieterich faces Brownstown/St. Elmo at 4 p.m. followed by Neoga against North Clay at 5:15, Sigel St. Michael and Windsor/Stew-Stras meeting at 6:30 and Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City against South Central at 7:45.

At Effingham

Effingham captured both seventh- and eighth-grade wins over Paris Crestwood Tuesday evening.

The Mustangs won the seventh-grade game 29-23 and improved to 7-2 on the season.

Leading Effingham were Anna Gouchenour and Alivia Lauritzen with eight points each.

In eighth-grade action, Effingham ran out to a 16-0 opening quarter lead and never looked back in a 39-11 victory.

Cloie Bailey led the way with 12 points while Arabella Barnhart added eight.

The Mustangs are now 4-5 on the season. Both teams will host a home tournament Saturday with Teutopolis and Mount Zion.

At Effingham

Effingham St. Anthony claimed both victories over Flora in Tuesday evening action.

The Bullpups were 23-12 winners in the seventh-grade game. St. Anthony edged out to a 10-6 first half lead then had a 13-6 second half run.

Brumleve led the way for St. Anthony with 10 points while E. Johnson added nine.

In eighth-grade play, St. Anthony was a 44-33 winner. The Bullpups ran out to a 14-9 opening quarter lead but led only 21-18 at hafltime.

St. Anthony then had a 23-15 second half run.

B. Schultz led the way with 16 points while T. Huebner added nine.

Teutopolis handed Richland County, Olney two losses Tuesday evening.

T-town was a 28-9 winner in the seventh-grade contest and improved to 14-1 on the season.

Mette scored 10 for the winners.

In eighth-grade play, T-town ripped out to a 30-2 first half lead and downed Olney 40-7.

Dennis scored 13 and Zerusen 11 as the team improve to 13-2.
