Effingham City Administrator Steve Miller shared with the Effingham City Council that the partners in the electric supply buying group has decided to pause the aggregation program and to revert back to Ameren as the electric supplier for the partner communities.

The cities of Charleston, Effingham, Mattoon, Paris, Neoga, Oakland, the Villages of Ashmore, Lerna and Humboldt along with Coles County are nearing the end of a contract with a rate of 11.895 cents. Ameren rates will be falling to 8.4 cents in October.

Recently the buying group, along with consultant The Stone River Group, worked to solicit new electric supply bids for residents. We were unable to secure an offer with a satisfactory combination of price and duration due to the current volatility in the market. The group has decided to pause the aggregation program and to revert back to Ameren as the electrical supplier.

The aggregation rate through the December meter read is more than 3-1/2 cents than the Ameren rate will be. Residents currently in the aggregation program may consider opting out by phoning Ameren at 1-800-755-5000.

Miller reminded that there are companies that may contact citizens offering electric contracts but they are not associated with the buying group. He asked citizens to use caution before entering contracts as sometimes the offers appear favorable but are most costly than Ameren rates.
