Altamont played host to Centralia in high school soccer competition Friday.
Centralia handed the Indians a 3-1 loss.
“They came in playing and wanted the game much more than we did,” said Altamont Coach Eric Morales.
Centralia came out the winner 3-1. Juan Fulk scored the lone goal for Altamont.
In the junior varsity match, Altamont was 1-0 winner.
“We got the win on a nice strike from the penalty stride by Jack Sharpe,” said Morales.
Altamont then returned to action Saturday to face Effingham St. Anthony and came out a 5-0 winner.
“Things started slowly with the teams playing a scoreless first 25 minutes,” said Morales. “Calvin Bannister broke the tie with a goal that he nearly walked into the net from the left side. The 1-0 margin persisted until after halftime when a through pass from Aiden Rosales found Cooper Pals who put the ball in the twine for a 2-0 lead.
“Pals had been denied an obvious goal scoring opportunity a few minutes before when, instead of allowing the Indians to play advantage, the referee brought he ball back on an attempted tripping call against St. Anthony.
“The lead went 3-0 when a terrific crossing pass from Pals was drilled into the net by Kaleb Overton. Thereafter, we added two goals from corner kicks, both assisted by Rosales. The first of the two came from the foot of Hayden Bridges and the second from the forehead of Pals.
“Adam Wolff handled goalkeeping duties with late relief from Andrew Ellersick. The Indians are back in action Tuesday against Arthur/Lovington/Atwood-Hammond. It will be Senior Night for the tribe.
“Sometimes the final score does not tell the whole story,” said St. Anthony Coach Martin Reyes. “Even though we were down four players and a quarter of the team was injured, we played very well and stayed close most of the game.
“We put into practice the things we had focused on the last two practices. Joey LaSarge had great saves, and the defense line of Ike Daiber, Jackson Schultz, Issac Fallert, Eli Hiatt, and Riley Miller played very well. We finished the second half down by one goal and another player.
“In the second half, we continued to play well, creating chances. Due to the many hurting and injured players, many bench players stepped up and played well. Myra Christie played most of the game, pressing the ball and making the best of every opportunity she had. Altamont scored their second goal with 20 minutes left in the second half.
“We continue to play hard and well. Noah Jensen kept pressing the defense, Graham Miller and Michael Wright kept combining to create attacking opportunities, and Ronan Bailey and Alex Koester provide support on the midfield. We had a chance with a penalty with 15 minutes left in the game, but unfortunately, the shot was stopped well by the keeper.
“In the last 13 minutes, we were tired, hurting, and giving our all. Altamont scored a third goal, sealing the game, so we put our junior varsity players in to give them experience and protect our starters from further injuries. Altamont scored two more times.
“I’m very proud of the improvement the team is doing, and I’m looking forward to show what we can do when we have everyone healthy and 100%.”
