 Junior High Baseball Regional Weekend Scores

It will be an all-Effingham championship in the Class 1A Effingham St. Anthony Baseball Regional.

Effingham Sacred Heart rolled by Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City, 10-0 Saturday to move into the championship game.

Sacred Heart’s bats came alive in the second inning, powering the Shamrocks to a 10-0 victory over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City.

The Shamrocks broke open a scoreless game with a seven-run outburst in the bottom for the second. Logan Schoenhoff started the rally with an RBI double followed by an RBI single from leadoff hitter Chris Kenter. Gabe Traub then added an RBI double before Jackson LaSarge delivered the biggest hit of the inning, a bases-clearing double that plated three runs. A defensive error capped the scoring, giving Sacred Heart a commanding 7-0 lead.

The Shamrocks collected a total of 10 hits in the contest. Kenter was three-for-four with an RBI while Traub was two-for-three with a double and an RBI. LaSarge had the bases-clearing double and four RBI. Schoenhoff was two-for-three with a double and an RBI.

Traub and Bryce Hayes combined to toss a no-hitter. Traub was the winner with eight strikeouts and three walks in his three innings of work. Hayes had four strikeouts and one walk in the final two innings.

Effingham St. Anthony downed Neoga by an 11-5 tally.

The two teams played to a 1-1 opening inning tie. The Bullpups moved ahead with two in the third, then tacked on a single run in the fifth and seven in the sixth.

The Bullpups finished with 11 hits led by Reed Schumacher with two singles, a triple and an RBI, Sam Vineyard with two singles and three RBI, Luke Roewe with a double, Paxton Coulter with two singles and Eli Bales with  a single and an RBI.

Parker Phillips went three innings for the pitching win. He gave up one run, three hits, one walk and struck out four.

Baylor Matusas led Neoga in hitting with three singles

St. Anthony and Sacred Heart will meet at 4 p.m. Wednesday for the regional championship.

Class 1A Altamont Regional

Dieterich and North Clay were winners Saturday in the Altamont Regional.

Dieterich halted Altamont’s season with a 12-2 win in six innings in the opener.

Dieterich scored early, taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The Roadrunners finished with an 18-hit contest while three Dieterich pitchers combined to toss a one-hitter.

Chase Bohnhoff led the winners with two singles, two doubles and three RBI. Colten Keck had three singles and two RBI while Nolan Nussmeyer added three singles and an RBI. Landon McQueen and Reed Funneman had two singles and an RBI each while Callen Stortzum, Maddox Nichols and Nolan Gipson had a single and an RBI each.

Altamont had one hit.

North Clay took control of its game for an 11-1 win over Altamont Lutheran in the second contest.

Dieterich and North Clay will now meet for the championship Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Class 2A Teutopolis Regional

Teutopolis rallied to best Stewardson-Strasburg 12-11 Saturday. The Wooden Shoes trailed by as many as six runs during the game.

T-town collected 16 hits and Stew-Stras had 12 in the high-scoring affair.

The Comets got on board in the bottom of the first inning after an error scored one run. Jacob Duncan singled, scoring two runs, an error scored a run and Jacob Howe singled, scoring a run.

The Comets added to their early lead in the bottom of the third Howe doubled, scoring two runs and Tate Thompson singled, scoring a run and a wild pitched scored another run.

Teutopolis came back in the top of the fifth, scoring five runs on three hits. Mason Giles homered to left field, scoring two runs, Maddux Pals singled, scoring a run, Myles Hoene drew a walk, scoring a run and Kason Meyer drew walk scoring another run.

Stew-Stras took the lead in the bottom of the sixth by a 11-10 count. Johnny Richter singled, scoring the run.

But here came the Shoes. Giles singled to left field and the Shoes tied the game in the top of the seventh.

T-town then won the game as Pals doubled, scoring the winning run.

Finley Witges earned the win for the Shoes. He allowed two runs on six hits, striking out one and walking one over six innings.

The Shoes piled up 16 hits led by Giles with two singles, a home run and two RBI, Pals with two singles, a double nd three RBI, Hoene with a single, double and three RBI and Althoff with three singles and an RBI.

“I have coached most of these boys since they were five years old,” said Stew-Stras Coach Brock Friese. “I could not be more proud of the young men that they have grown up to be. It has been an honor and privilege to be their coach. I also want to thank my assistant coaches Toby Worman and Josh Nichols for the time and energy they have poured into these young men.

In the second game, Cumberland handed Brownstown/St. Elmo a 7-4 loss.

The Raiders edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead. Brownstown-St. Elmo came back with four runs in the fourth. But Cumberland tallied two in the bottom of the fifth to pull within 4-3 then tallied four more in the sixth for the winning margin.

Cumberland finished with seven hits led by G. Murphy with two singles, a double and two RBI, B. Clapp with 1 single and double, J. Sherrick with a single and an RBI, A. Dittamore with two RBI and C. Finn with an RBI.

Cumberland’s Dittamore picked up the win in relief. He came on in the fifth inning, giving up two hits while striking out two.

Teutopolis and Cumberland will now square off at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday for the regional championship.

Class 2A Casey-Westfield Regional

Casey-Westfield edged Lawrenceville Parkview 6-5 in the first game of the day Saturday.

In the second contest, Jasper County saw its season come to a close as Marshall was a 2-1 winner.

Casey-Westfield and Marshall will square off at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday for the regional championship.

 

Class 3A Effingham Regional

Effingham will be playing for the championship of its own regional after trouncing Mattoon by a 12-0 count Saturday.

The Mustangs edged out to a 2-0 opening inning lead then tacked on a single run in the second, two in the third and finished the game with seven runs in the fourth.

Brody Nelson picked up the win on the mound. He went all four innings, allowing no runs on two hits, no walks while striking out six.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs had eight hits. Deek Thompson had the lone extra base hit with a double. Aldam LeDuc added two singles and two RBI while Brady Nelson had a single and three RBI, Roman Martin a single and two RBI and Kael Koeberlein, Calvin Beck and Levi Eckert had a single and an RBI each.

Effingham improved to 12-3-1 and advances to the regional championship Wednesday against Vandalia at 4 p.m.
