MOUNT ZION — Effingham High School continued its soccer domination. The latest victim was Apollo Conference opponent Mount Zion Thursday.
The Hearts blanked the Braves by a 3-0 count, extending their record to 7-1-1 overall and 1-1-1 in conference play.
” It was an excellent team performance where all players chipped in to get us a convincing victory,” said EHS Coach Logan Arney. “Maicol Sefton ended with two goals and one assist with Camilo Aden putting in the third goal. Gage Kinder had a strong performance with two assists. Goalkeeper Brady Wilson ended with his fifth clean sheet in eight games.
“Beyond the stat sheet, several other players had very strong games, including Sebastian Simoni who stopped many attacks with his strong defensive performance. It was a great win where we could see the high potential of this team. We’ll look to build on this victory as we take on Altamont at home this Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by the junior varsity match. Come out and support your Hearts!”
At Altamont
Altamont hosted a match Thursday as Trenton Wesclin stopped by.
“Temperatures shifted today making the playing field a bit warm to start,” said Altamont Coach Eric Morales. “But the Indians came awake and ready to fire.
“Five minutes into the game, Cooper Pals found Aiden Rosales on a beautiful pass to net the first goal of the match. We were fired up and had the pressure up hard. Seventeen minutes went by and Aiden Rosales found Ashton Buchanan right outside about 20 yards with a beautiful strike over the goalie to skim the top and slide right in making it 2-0 Indians.
“Five minutes later, Cooper Pals picked up a bouncer in the box and pushed it right in making it 3-0 for us right before half.
“We came out still fighting in the second half controlling the pace of the game and taking shot after shot just missing wide every time. Eight minutes in, Cooper Pals found Rosales again with another beautiful shot into the back of the net. A minute later, Chase Pals picks up a lose ball in the box and put it away taking us to a 5-0 lead deep into the second half.
“Wesclin does take advantage on a miskick by us, netting a goal and ending the game. Altamont took home the win 5-1.”
The Indians return to action Saturday at 10 a.m. to face local rival at Effingham in a 10 a.m. contest.
At Mattoon
Teutopolis played a hard-fought competitive match with Mattoon and the contest ended in a 0-0 draw Thursday.
“It was a great match despite the score,” said T-town Coach Aaron Wendt. “We are now 5-1-2.
“The junior varsity also played great and got their fourth win of the season. Chris Habing scored a beautiful goal with an assist from Grant Tegler for the 1-0 win.”
