Problems with the water in the city of Altamont led more than a dozen residents to attend this week’s City Council meeting. The lack of rainfall seems to be the cause of the problems.
Some residents have had to deal with brown water. The City is testing the water, though, and finding that it is safe to drink. Similar problems existed last year but, while it might not be as bad as a year ago, it has lasted longer. Also, customers living closer to the water treatment plant are seeing improvements.
A representative of Curry and Associates Engineers plans to attend the Council meeting on the 22nd to discuss what’s happening and what corrections can be made.
The Council also approved a project to submit an OSLAD grant request for improvements to Gilbert Park. The City plans to buy land from the Kull family for a dog park, then to add seating, bleachers, new restrooms, fencing, a scoreboard and lighting. The total price is $382,500.
An intergovernmental agreement between the City and the Altamont school district was approved. The agreement allows the school district to change storm drainage into the ditch along the west side of Ewing Street.
Alex Wendling was awarded a bid as the higher of two bidders at $7,500 for the purchase of 703 Field Street in East Meadows Subdivision. Also approved was a private development contract for a piece of land in the TIF District in the former Altamont Independent building downtown for Goldie’s Bakery for $55,000.
The Altamont Council purchased three turbidity meters for the water treatment plant for $18,563.42, and approved a roadside fundraiser request by the Altamont Lions Club for Lions Club Candy Day on October 17th.
The Council approved an auction agreement with Local Liquidators for sale of the equipment at 600 South Main by Schmidt Park. The auction company will get 35% of the total sales raised. It was also announced that Altamont’s Trunk or Treat is moving from downtown to Schmidt Park on October 31st.
