Effingham High School and Newton battled during the varsity volleyball match Thursday evening before the Hearts pulled out the victory.
EHS won the opening set 25-23. Newton battled back to take the second set 26-24. But the Hearts came through with a 25-19 count for the win.
“All three levels were competitive,” said EHS Coach Laurie Bohnhoff. “The varsity match was back and forth with a lot of amazing plays.
“Our varsity stands at 1-1. Our first 10 matches are all against great competition. So this win was huge.”
The Hearts’ Mckenzie Love led the way in kills with 11 and blocks with nine. Berkley Pullen had 23 assists. Alyssa Martin led in digs with 20. Averie Wolf contributed led in aces with two.
Newton was led by Bierman with nine kills and 26 digs, Shull with 16 assists and Pitcher with three blocks. The Eagles are back in action Saturday at the Fairfield Tournament and will take on Lawrenceville and Carbondale in pool play.
In the junior varsity match, Newton was a winner 26-24, 25-23. The Hearts were led by Mara Braun with four kills and two blocks, Bailey Bohnhoff with eight assists and Macy Kirk with 14 digs.
In freshman/sophomore play, Newton was the winner, 25-12, 22-25, 15-11.

At Effingham
Effingham St. Anthony took on National Trail Conference opponent South Central and claimed a victory Thursday.
The Bulldogs won 25-12, 25-19. Cara Hatton led in kills with 13 and digs with 10. Audrey Lasarge had four blocks. Madelyn Gilmore led in assists with 20.
South Central was led by Maddie Peddicord with nine digs and three kills, Lauren Johnson with three kills. Kinlee Thompson and River Yingst had one block each. The Cougars are 1-1 on the season.
The match was the season opener for the Bulldogs who return to action Tuesday in the annual Pinkout match hosting Effingham.
The Bulldogs also won the junior varsity contest. South Central took the opening set 25-19 but St. Anthony came back with 25-14, 25-12 counts for the match.
South Central claimed the freshman/sophomore match, 25-11, 25-23.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg took on Central A&M and claimed a victory in two sets, 25-18, 25-16 in the season opener.
“The girls have been working so hard,” said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. “To finally see them compete is so fun. We have some new faces on the floor and we are still trying out a few spots. Overall, I really liked what I saw for the first game.”
Mya Friese led in kills with 13 while Brinley Durbin led in assists with 19. Durbin and Zaida Wascher had six digs each.. Brooke Schumacher led in aces with three and block assists with two.
Windsor/Stew-Stras claimed the junior varsity match, 25-20, 25-10. In freshman/sophomore play, the Hatchets were winners, 25-23, 25-23.

Teutopolis suffered its first loss of the season, this one to Salem Thursday.
The Wooden Shoes won the opening set 25-15 but Salem came back with 25-18, 25-22 wins for the match. T-town falls to 2-1.
Madison Miller led in kills for the Shoes with 13. Marie Zumbahlen had eight aces and 13 points. Kaylie Jordan led in digs with 13 and assists with 34.
T-town was a winner in junior varsity play. The Wooden Shoes lost the opener 26-24 but came back with 26-24, 15-9 to remain unbeaten at 3-0.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City was a winner over Dieterich in both junior varsity and varsity action Thursday.
The Bobcats won the varsity contest, 25-16, 25-23. Allison Shields and Jalizah Bowlin had four kills each. Timber Watson led in aces with three. Gracie Wright had eight assists. Shields led in blocks with two. Watson had seven digs.
Dieterich was led by Bailey Brummer, Kinley Will and Lydia Wohltman had one ace each. Mariah Muhs had five digs. Bailey Brummer led in kills with two and blocks with two. Lydia Fuesting had two blocks
Dieterich was a winner in the junior varsity match, 25-14, 22-25, 25-19.
The two teams split freshman/sophomore wins. Dieterich won 25-23 and CHBC was a 25-23 winner.

St. Elmo/Brownstown remained unbeaten with a 25-6, 25-16 victory over Vandalia Thursday.
St. Elmo/Brownstown ripped out to a quick 8-2 lead and went on a 6-0 run to push out to a 14-2 lead. Vandalia was able to tack a few more points on the scoreboard but th SEB offense put the first set away 25-6.
Vandalia had the serve to start the second set and was able to score first on an SEB error and take a 4-2 lead. SEB tied at 4-4 with the two teams battling back and forth for the next several points to tie again at 8-8.
With Vandalia showing adjustments from the first set, the Vandals utilized some well placed hits before SEB took advantage of a few hitting errors to get a lead for good and play to a 25-16 set win.
Ariana Kistler led in kills with six and had one block. Peyton Barker had nine digs and a block. Addie Sasse led in assists with 12. Sasse, Presley Williams, Alivia Claycomb, P. Barker and Macey Sapp had one ace each.
SEB is now 3-0 on the season and will have a week off before returning to action next Thursday hosting South Central.
At Vandalia

The Cardinals won the opening set 25-21 but Cumberland came back with 25-22, 25-8 victories for the win. North Clay dropped to 0-2 on the season and is back in action at the Fairfield KO Classic Saturday.
North Clay won the junior varsity match, 25-14, 25-13.
At Sullivan
Sullivan was a winner over Neoga by 25-16, 25-18 counts Thursday.
Josalyn Henderson led in digs with six and kills with three. Natalie Ballinger also had three kills. Madelynn Frankie and Keeli McKay had one block each. Chloe Frankie led in assists with four.
In a Tuesday match against Okaw Valley, Neoga was a winner 25-25, 25-19, 25-17.
Brooklyn Douglas led in digs with nine. Ballinger and C. Franke had two blocks each while M. Frankie had nine kills.
