The City of Altamont and the Altamont school district have reached agreement on a method to move storm water out of the Altamont Community High School parking lot along Ewing Street.

Tony Schenk of Gonzalez Companies in Belleville, the school district engineering firm, said the amount of storm water involved won’t cause flooding in the ditch along Ewing or affect the properties along the west side of the street.

The plan is to install six 12-inch outlets into the ditch. The work, which still needs okayed by the city’s attorney, will be completed in the summer of 2026. The school district will take care of the installation while the City will do the maintenance.

The Council agreed to reduce the setback at Andrew’s Eats along Route 40 from 50 feet down to 15 feet as part of an expansion project at the restaurant. Also approved was an upgrade of the city’s meter reading system for just over $43,000, and the Council approved the demolition of the former Schultz’s Dairy Bar at 600 South Main. The contents of the building will be sold, followed by the demolition. The Council then plans to invite food trucks to locate at the site, which is next door to Schmidt Park.

Council members also approved a TIF administration services agreement with South Central Illinois Regional Planning and Development Commission.
