NEWTON — Effingham Junior High School opened the softball season with a 6-3 victory over Jasper County Friday.
The Mustangs had 11 hits in the contest led by Alivia Lauritzen with three doubles. Cloie Bailey, Mady Hoffman and Mackynzie Hites had two singles each. Bailey added two RBI while Hoffman and Hites had an RBI each. Mia Hartke finished with a single and an RBI.
Kendyl Smith picked up the pitching win, going four innings, allowing three runs on four hits, one walk while striking out six.
Effingham returns to action Monday playing host to Mount Zion.

Dieterich pounded out 10 hits and tallied a 13-3 victory over Paris Crestwood in five innings Friday.
Dieterich moved into an 8-3 opening quarter lead and finished the game in the fifth inning via the 10-run rule.
Lydia Kreke went three innings on the mound, tossing a five-hitter with no walks while striking out six. Kreke also aided her own cause offensively with three singles and an RBI.
Ava Benefiel had a single, triple and two RBI while Kambryn Mellendorf had a double and two RBI, Kreke with three singles and an RBI, Addison Icenogle with two singles and two RBI and Avery White with a single and an RBI. Nora Wente added an RBI.

Altamont ran out to a 10-1 opening inning lead and never looked back in a 13-1 victory in four innings over North Clay Friday.
The winners finished with seven hits led by Ort with three singles and three RBI, O. Bowman with two singles and three RBI and Z. Kraemer and B. McClellan with a single and an RBI each.
B. Suckow went four innings on the mound. She gave up one run on two hits, did not allow a walk while striking out 11.
North Clay’s two hits came off the bat of G. Blair with a single and double.

In a Saturday contest, Sullivan came calling and claimed a 13-5 win over Neoga.
Sullivan took a 4-2 opening inning lead but Neoga pulled within a run in the second. Sullivan then scored four in the third and went on for the victory.
Neoga finished with 10 hits led by K. Bell with three of those hits. She had two doubles, a home run and two RBI. N. Hartke added four singles and two RBI and M. White two singles.
