CHICAGO — The Chicago Cubs banged out 13 hits while Matthew Boyd held the St. Louis Cardinals down as he struck out nine in his five innings on the mound. The result? The Cubs pounded St. Louis by an 11-0 count Sunday.
The Cubs edged out to a 1-0 opening inning lead then tacked on two in the second, five in the third, two in the fourth and a final run in the fifth.
Nico Hoerner went three for four at the plate with a single, double and triple. He drove in a run. Seiya Suzuki hit a double and a home run. He drove in two. Reese McGuire had two singles and two RBI while Michael Busch added a single and double. Kyle Tucker finished with a single and three RBI. Pete Crow-Armstrong added two singles and an RBI and Ian Happ had an RBI.
The Cardinals went through five pitchers. Erick Fedde went 1.1 innings, allowing three runs on two hits, and four walks. John King went 0.2 innings giving up four runs on four hits and Jo Jo Swanson went 2.2 innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Fedde picked up the loss to drop to 3-9 on the season.
Chicago’s Matthew Boyd was the winner on the mound. He went five innings, giving up three hits, one walk while striking out nine. Boyd is now 9-3 on the season.
Willson Contreras had a single and double and Thomas Saggese a double for the Cardinals.
