ST. LOUIS — St. Louis fans got to see the long ball Monday evening as the Cardinals banged out four home runs in downing the Chicago Cubs by an 8-2 count at Busch Stadium.
Both teams went the first three innings scoreless before the Cardinals moved ahead in the fourth
The Cardinals broke free as Lars Nootbaar hit a two-run shot to start the home run barrage in the third inning.
The Cubs came back with a run in the fifth as Pete Crow-Armstrong doubled to lead off the inning. He then scored on a single by Carson Kelly.
Here came the Cardinals on a hot night as Brendan Donovan hit a home run in the bottom of the fifth. Alec Burleson then followed with his ninth home run. Both scored two RBI each and the Cardinals moved into a 6-1 lead.
St. Louis added on two more in the sixth as Nolan Gorman knocked out a homer with one on and the score stood at 8-1.
The Cubs came back with their final run in the seventh.
St. Louis finished with 11 hits while the Cubs had seven. Neither team committed an error.
The two teams are back in action today. The Cubs will start Jameson Taillon (7-4, 3.84 ERA) while the Cardinals will go with Michael McGreevy (1-1. 2.70). Game time is 6:45 p.m.
