OAKMONT, Pa. — With rain interrupting play, the U.S. Open was finally decided when J.J. Spaun made a birdie on the 17th hole, breaking at tie and then hit a long birdie putt on the 18th hole and claimed the championship of the 125th U.S. Open.
The 34-year-old went into this tournament with the odds against him but he came through with steady play. He was the first round leader with a 66. Rain interrupted play but Spaun, who had never competed at Oakmont Country Club, didn’t let the waterworks upset him. He just continued on and was the lone player to finish below par.
He continued his steady play but started the final round with three straight bogeys. He fought back to pick up the victory.
Spaun played collegiate golf for San Diego State.
He came into the final six holes tied with Sam Burns, Adam Scott, Carlos Ortiz and Tyrrell Hatton.
