The end of the Illinois spring legislative session is sometimes as important for what doesn’t pass, as what does.

That for many included House Bill 1237. The measure known as the “Mascot Bill” would have directly impacted approximately 100 school districts across Illinois, including the Altamont and Neoga districts, by restricting the use of Native American names, mascots, and imagery, regardless of context, meaning, or local history.

The House bill advanced to the Illinois Senate, but there was no movement there. Altamont Superintendent Casey Adam said the lack of action in the Senate means the bill is dead. The exception would be if the bill gets picked back up in the fall veto session.
