EJHS, Stew-Stras Fall In State Volleyball Tourneys

Effingham and Stewardson-Strasburg fell in junior high state volleyball action Saturday.
Class 7-1A State Tournament
Stewardson-Strasburg competed in the Class 7-1A State Tournament at Pawnee JHS/HS and lost in opening round play to Cissna Park 25-19, 25-20.
Both teams started a little tentative in the first set, trading side-out points before either team got into a rhythm. Stew-Stras' Mackenzi Tabbert served five straight points with three aces to give the Comets the lead. However, the Wildcats made a quick comeback and Cissna Park went up 23-17.
The Wildcat's Erica Walder put the last point up with her winning serve to take the first set 25-19.
In the second set, Cissna Park took the early lead but the Comets fought back to cut the lead to 23-20. But Sloan Boyce's net play was too much and she served out the match at 25-20.
Stew-Stras finished the season with a 17-6 record while Cissna Park moved on to face Lovejoy and lost 25-22, 25-16.
In other matches, Lovejoy won over Royal Prairieview Ogden 25-19, 25-23, Peoria Limestone Walters beat Decatur Our Lady of Lourdes 25-23, 25-22 and Mount Pulaslki won over Pontiac St. Mary's 25-12, 25-7. Mount Pulaski then downed Peoria Limestone Walters 25-16, 25-21.
The third place match will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday featuring Cissna Park against Peoria Limestone Walters while the championship will feature Lovejoy against Mount Pulaski at 6:45 p.m.
Class 1A State Tournament
Stewardson-Strasburg -- Tabbert, 5 kills, 5 aces, 7 points; Reed, 2 aces, 3 points, 2 assists; Davis, 1 kill, 1 ace, 2 points; Waldhoff, 1 ace, 4 points, 3 assists; Vonderheide, 3 points; Weeden, 1 point
Class 4A State Tournament
Effingham saw its season come to a close in its opening match at the 4A State Tournament at East Peoria Central Junior High School.
The Mustangs went up against unbeaten Channahon and fell in two sets. Channahon won the opener 25-11 then came back with a 25-20 victory for the match.
Effingham ends the season with a 19-5 record.
In other matches, Edwardsville Lincoln won over Frankfort Summit Hill 25-18, 25-15; Mount Zion won over Bloomington 25-14, 25-19; Mount Zion then beat Edwardsville Lincoln 25-17, 25-18; Manteno beat Homer Glen Homer 25-15, 25-20. Channahon then faced Manteno and won 25-18, 22-25, 25-17. Channhon advanced to the championship against Mount Zion at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday with a 25-0 mark. Edwardsville Lincoln will face Mateno at 5:30 p.m. for third place.
