Altamont, Newton Win at Newton Tourney, Girls Roundup

NEWTON -- Altamont and Newton claimed victories at the Bob Kerans Girls Basketball Tournament Monday evening.

 

Altamont handed Effingham a 63-46 loss. The Hearts took a 12-11 opening quarter lead but Altamont came back to move ahead 30-22 at halftime. Altamont held a six-point lead going into the final quarter then had a 16-5 run.

Three players hit double digits for the Indians. Allyson Hardiek tallied 19 points while Brooke Runge scored 15 and Mary Guse 13.

Effingham was led by Ella Niebrugge with 15 and Taylor Armstrong with 11.

In the second contest, Newton was a 56-38 winner over Vandalia. The Eagles edged out to a 14-12 opening quarter lead and led 29-22 at halftime. Newton then had a 17-8 third period surge.

Jansen scored 22 points while Zumbahlen added 12 for Newton.

Tonight's games include Effingham against Flora at 6 followed by Newton facing Altamont at 7:30.

At Farina

South Central pounded Ramsey in girls regular season play Monday, 73-23.

The Cougars ran off to a 23-6 opening quarter lead and that was all it took.

Three players finished in double figures for the Cougars. Laney Webster scored 20 points while Kayli Swift added 17 and Halle Smith 11. South Central is now 1-2 on the season.

Brownstown/St. Elmo came calling and picked up a National Trail Conference win over Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg Monday.

BSE edged out to a 16-13 opening quarter lead and led 28-26 at halftime. BSE then had a 16-6 third period run and outscored the Comets 25-10 in the final period.

Claire Wilhour led the BSE attack with 27 points, four assists and seven steals. Oberlink chipped in with 15 points and 10 rebounds while Campbell had 13 points, eight rebounds and three steals.

WSS was led by Mikala Nichols with 16 points.

Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran handed North Clay (Louisville) a 54-43 loss in action Monday.

The Cardinals stepped out to a 14-9 opening quarter lead on CORL but trailed 27-24 at halftime and 42-31 going into the final quarter.

M. Lovett was the lone player in double figures for North Clay with 12 points.

CORL also nabbed the junior varsity contest, 34-27. North Clay was led by A. Czyzewski with 12 points.

Marshall stepped out to a 16-15 opening quarter lead and went on to beat Neoga, 51-32 in action Monday.

Three players scored in double figures for  Marshall and those included Compton with 19, Hiatt with 13 and Osborn with 10.

Neoga was led by Richards with eight points and Phillips with seven. Ramert pulled down eight rebounds.

Neoga drops to 1-2 on the season.
