Reds Down Cubs, White Sox Win, ML Roundup

Reds Dump Cubs

(Chicago, IL) -- Brandon Phillips connected for a grand slam in the third inning to help the Reds take down the Cubs, 6-2, in the opener a four-game series at Wrigley Field.  Phillips drove in all six runs for Cincinnati on two hits. Zach Cozart was 2-for-4 with three runs scored for the Reds, who improved to 38-26. Homer Bailey stands at 4-and-4 after dealing eight innings with eight strikeouts and allowing one unearned run.  Chicago was 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Starlin Castro was 1-for-4 with an RBI. Scott Feldman took the loss and the Cubs fell to 25-36.

Dunn Powers White Sox Past Blue Jays

(Chicago, IL) -- Adam Dunn went 4-for-4 with two homers and five RBI to power the White Sox to a 10-6 win over the Blue Jays at The Cell. Alejandro De Aza finished 2-for-5 with two RBI for Chicago, which has won three straight.  Nate Jones picked up the win out of the bullpen for the Sox. Jose Bautista clubbed two homers and drove in five for Toronto, which has lost back-to-back games after a three-game winning streak. Colby Rasmus also connected on a solo shot for the Blue Jays while R.A. Dickey allowed seven runs over five innings to fall to 5-8. The game was delayed for a little over an hour in the third inning due to heavy fog.

Brewers Hook Marlins

(Miami, FL) -- Jonathan Lucroy was 4-for-5 with two RBI to lead the Brewers in a 6-1 win over the Marlins in Miami. Carlos Gomez went 3-for-5 and drove in two while Rickie Weeks had a solo homer and was 3-for-5 as well in the win.  Yovani Gallardo tossed eight innings of four-hit ball to improve to 5-and-6 for Milwaukee, which has won four straight.  Ricky Nolasco surrendered four runs on ten hits over 5 1/3 innings to fall to 3-7 for Miami. Ed Lucas' RBI groundout in the ninth gave the Marlins their only run. Miami had won its previous two contests.

Padres Clip Braves

(San Diego, CA) -- Justin Upton took the final strike looking in the bottom of the ninth as the Braves comeback attempt was thwarted for a 7-6 Padres win in San Diego.  The Padres jumped out to a 7-2 lead behind a three-run homer from Will Venable.  Jason Marquis improved to 8-2 dealing seven-and-two-thirds innings of two-run ball to help the Padres win for the fourth time in their last six games. Jason Heyward hit solo homers in the eighth and ninth, while Evan Gattis connected for a three-run shot in the last inning for Atlanta. Julio Teheran took the loss after allowing five runs in six innings. The Braves had won their previous two games.   

Diamondbacks' Big Inning Stuns Dodgers

(Los Angeles, CA) -- The Diamondbacks plated four runs in the top of the ninth inning off Dodgers closer Brandon League to complete a comeback and win 5-4 at Dodger Stadium. Willie Bloomquist drove in two with an infield single with two out and the bases loaded to give Arizona the lead and Paul Goldschmidt drove in a key insurance run. Heath Bell had a rocky ninth inning but managed to escape further damage after Juan Uribe's solo home run to pick up his 12th save. The Dodgers' Yasiel Puig continued his hot hitting since being called up last week, going 3-for-4.  Mark Ellis also homered for the Dodgers in defeat. L.A. couldn't take advantage of another good start from ace Clayton Kershaw, who allowed just a run on six hits over seven innings. League took the loss and blew his fourth save opportunity of the season.

O's Edge Angels In Baltimore

(Baltimore, MD) -- Adam Jones hit a two-run homer and drove in three to power the Orioles to a 4-3 win over the Angels at Camden Yards. Freddy Garcia pitched six innings of two-run ball to improve to 3-and-3 while Jim Johnson locked down his 22nd save for the O's. Baltimore has won two in-a-row and five of its last eight. The game was interrupted by a rain delay of over two hours. Josh Hamilton hit a solo homer and drove in two while Mike Trout added a solo shot for Los Angeles. Jered Weaver was dealt the loss after allowing four runs in five-and-two-thirds innings to fall to 1-2. The Halos have lost three straight.

Red Sox Slide Past Rays In 14

(St. Petersburg, FL) -- Daniel Nava singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the 14th inning and the Red Sox tacked on another run for a 10-8 win over the Rays at Tropicana Field. Jarrod Saltalamacchia drove in three runs with four hits while Nava, Dustin Pedroia and Mike Carp each drove in a pair of runs. Franklin Morales pitched two innings for the win to improve to 2-0. Ben Zobrist enjoyed a 5-for-7 night in the loss for the Rays. The Rays rallied from a 6-0 deficit and scored twice in the 10th inning to keep the game going.  Cesar Ramos allowed two runs on five hits in three innings to take the loss and fall to 1-2. Boston starter John Lackey drilled Rays outfielder Matt Joyce in the back with a pitch in the bottom of the sixth, leading the benches to clear. After some minor pushing and shoving, order was restored.

Rangers Double Up Indians

(Arlington, TX  -- Lance Berkman belted a go-ahead two-run homer during a three-run seventh inning, as the Rangers doubled up the Indians 6-3 in the first of three games in Arlington. Jeff Baker also hit a two-run homer for the Rangers, who have won two in-a-row after a three-game skid. Robbie Ross picked up the win in relief. Joe Nathan pitched a perfect ninth for his 20th save.  Carlos Santana hit a three-run double for Cleveland, which has dropped eight straight and 14 of its last 17. Scott Kazmir allowed four runs in six frames as he slipped to 3-4 with the loss.

Royals Clip Tigers For Sixth Straight Win

(Kansas City, MO) -- Lorenzo Cain's infield single plated the go-ahead run in the third inning as the Royals held on for a 3-2 win over the Tigers in the opener of a three-game series at Kauffman Stadium. Salvador Perez hit a two-run triple during the three-run third inning for KC, which has won six straight. Jeremy Guthrie permitted two runs on six hits over six-and-a-third innings as he upped his mark to 7-3. Greg Holland pitched a perfect ninth for his 13th save. Miguel Cabrera clubbed a two-run homer for Detroit, which had won its previous four. Doug Fister gave up three runs on nine hits over eight frames as he fell to 5-4.

Mariners Edge Astros

(Seattle, WA) -- Hisashi Iwakuma struck out eight over seven strong innings and the Mariners edged the Astros 3-2 in the opener of a three-game series at Safeco Field.  Iwakuma allowed just an unearned run on four hits and a walk to improve to 7-1. Raul Ibanez hit a home run and closer Tom Wilhelmsen nailed down his 16th save despite giving up a run in the ninth. The Mariners had lost four of their last five coming into the game. Dallas Keuchel pitched well in defeat, giving up two runs on seven hits with six strikeouts over six innings. The Astros have lost five straight games.  Houston's Jose Altuve extended his hitting streak to 11 games in the loss.
