Roy Edmond Shoots (86) of Lerna

Roy Edmond Shoots, 86, of Lerna, IL passed away at 8:00 a.m. on April 30, 2012 at the
Casey Health Care Center in Casey, IL.

Private family memorial services will be held at a later date. Barkley Funeral Chapel in
Toledo is assisting the family.

Roy was born on the family farm in rural Johnstown, IL January 27, 1926 to GE and Bessie Ozee Shoots, where he lived his entire life. He finished grade school in Johnstown. Due to his father’s health he took over the family farm at the age of 12. He completed his high school degree in Lerna. While attending H.S, he did the morning chores, then walked 3 miles to H.S, walked home and did the evening chores. He was a dedicated farmer. He started farming with a team of horses and shucked corn by hand.  He was partners with his father and brother in oil wells near Flora, IL and a limestone quarry in Iuka, IL. He and his son RD had a successful hog production business, raised Simmental Cattle and drilled oil wells in the Mattoon fields. Roy’s motto was…any job started is half done.

He is survived by the love of his life, Mary Ella Ingram Shoots. They eloped to Henderson, KY on Sept 4th, 1948 and recently celebrated 63 ½ years of marriage.  Also surviving are their 3 children; Vicky Collier, husband Mal of Burlington, KY; Jackie Huddlestun, husband Gary of Mattoon; Roy David Shoots (Lynn deceased) of Ft. Myers FL. 4 grandsons: Dr. Rob Shoots, wife Kim of El Paso, TX; Lance Shoots, special friend Kristin Alwardt of Lerna; Dr. Bret Collier, wife Reagan of College Station, TX; Lexx Collier, wife Jana of Seattle, WA. 2 granddaughters: Nicole Osborne, husband Greg of Effingham; Natalie Huddlestun of Tempe, AZ. 7 great-grandchildren; Evan Collier, Kennedy Collier, Avery Shoots, Jackson Shoots, Laney Osborne, Lacey Osborne and Samia Malaspinas.  Other relatives are his sister, Evelyn Titus of Mattoon and George Shoots, deceased.
