The federal energy department has signed off on the long-running FutureGen clean coal project in western Illinois.

The Energy Department has approved the one-point-65-billion-dollar plan to retrofit a coal-fired power plant in Meredosia.  The new technology would remove carbon dioxide from the coal and store it underground.

The FutureGen project could start this year if it gets a permit to store the gas and finalizes its financing.
