After more than a month at a hospital and rehabilitation facility in St. Louis, Kyal Hoelscher, better known as "Coach Kyal", was welcomed home Tuesday evening.

Kyal's father, Levi Hoelscher, said he was released from the hospital this afternoon, then picked up by a fire truck when they got to Effingham. After he made a trip through Wendy's (where Kyal's dad works), they were greeted by a large crowd lining Edgar Avenue near their home.

Kyal suffers from Hydrocephalus, a condition where a build-up of fluid occurs in the cavities deep within the brain. A shunt that had been installed to help drain the fluid failed in early October, resulting in Kyal being airlifted to a hospital in St. Louis

A benefit organized by Effingham's football moms raised more than $7,800 for the family and drew more than 1,500 people to Klosterman Field.

Kyal's father said they are hopeful he'll be able to return to school in January.
