Trinity Wins St. Anthony, Effingham Albion Volleyball Tourneys, Roundup

Stewardson Trinity won the championship of the Effingham St. Anthony Eighth-Grade Volleyball Tournament. Stewardson Trinity won the championship of the Effingham St. Anthony Eighth-Grade Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

Stewardson Trinity defeated Holy Cross, 25-14, 25-19 and then downed Red Hill (Bridgeport), 25-2, 25-7. Trinity then beat North Clay (Louisville), 25-18, 25-23 and finished out with a victory in the championship match over Oblong. Trinity won the opening set 25-22 before Oblong took the second set 25-21. Trinity won the match 15-9.

"My girls did amazing," said Trinity Coach Tammy Manhart. "The North Clay and Oblong matches were tough. In the second set of North Clay we were down 20-16 but kept fighting. North Clay kept the ball alive. Nothing came easy. They had us 23-19 and we were able to hold them for the win 25-23.

"The championship was just as tough going three sets battling point for point the whole way. My girls are getting tougher mentally which really shows in matches like these. It was a big day and I am so proud of my team."

North Clay finished fourth at the tourney. They defeated Red Hill 25-10, 25-11 and won over Holy Gross 25-6, 25-18. North Clay then fell to Trinity Lutheran 25-18, 25-23 and lost to Sigel St. Michael, 25-18, 25-6.

 

At Albion

Effingham captured the championship of the Edwards County (Albion) Tournament Saturday.

Effingham defeated Grayville, 25-9, 25-11 and Lovejoy 25-13, 25-22. The Mustangs then beat Newton St. Thomas. They lost the opener 26-24 but came back strong with 25-22, 15-12 matches for the victory.

The Mustangs seventh-grade went 1-2 in the Albion Tournament. 

Newton St. Thomas beat Effingham. The Mustangs won 25-12 before St. Thomas took the next two sets, 25-11, 15-13. West Salem won over Effingham, 25-14, 23-25, 15-9.

Effingham defeated Lovejoy, 25-23, 25-13.

At St. Elmo

Teutopolis claimed victories over St. Elmo/Brownstown Friday.

The Wooden Shoes won the seventh-grade match, 25-10, 25-20.

In eighth-grade action, St. Elmo/Brownstown won the opening set 27-25 but T-town came back with 25-15, 25-14 scores for the match.

Both T-town teams are 9-1 on the season and return to action today at Taylorville.
