SPRINGFIELD -- The Trinity Lutheran volleyball team went to Springfield for the Lutheran State Tournament this past weekend.

The top 20 Lutheran schools competed. Friday and Saturday mornings were pool play.  Trinity won its pool, defeating Crystal Lake, Collinsville Holy Cross and Park Ridge.

"The girls started off very strong in our first match on Friday but were a little streaky in our second match playing really well at times and making lots of errors at other times," said Trinity coach Tammy Manhart. "Saturday afternoon, we played our first match of bracket play that determined if we would be in the top four or bottom four.  It was a hard-fought match but a heartbreaking loss to Mount Prospect.  We had to regroup and play again that night to determine if we would play for fifth/sixth or seventh/eighth. I was proud of the girls as they bounced back from the hard loss earlier in the day.

"We beat Trinity Bloomington in two sets. Sunday morning, we played in the fifth place match against Bethalto.  We just weren't able to find our rhythm, making lots of errors. Even though we were a little disappointed in the way we finished the tournament, I told the girls they had so much to be proud of. They played some really good volleyball.

"This group is really just getting started and getting used to playing with each other.  We graduated several eighth-graders last year so this is the first eighth-grade experience that most of these players have had.  I am so excited to see how they grow and improve as a team.  We will compete again in January and February.

Trniity Lutheran defeated Crystal Lake, 25-11, 25-10 and won over Collinsville Holy Cross, 25-20, 23-25, 25-14 and Park Ridge, 25-14, 25-3 in pool play. Trinity Lutheran lost to Mount Prospect, 28-26, 13-25, 25-22, won over Bloomington Trinity, 25-18, 25-15 and lost to Bethalto, 25-20, 25-19 in bracket play.
