Bulldogs Headed To State Volleyball Tourney, Windsor/Stew-Stras Falls

OKAWVILLE -- Effingham St. Anthony High School is headed to the Class 1A State Volleyball Tournament!

The Bulldogs won the Okawville Super-sectional Friday. St. Anthony easily handed Norris City/Omaha/Enfield a loss in two sets, 25-22, 25-11.

Abbi Hatton and Cara Hatton led in kills with seven each. Addie Wernsing, Andrea Rudolphi, A. Hatton and Addi Nuxoll had one ace each. Nuxoll led in blocks with two.

Stacie Vonderheide had 13 assists and Wernsing 12. Maddie Kibler led in digs with eight.

St. Anthony is now 32-8 on the season and will compete in the Class 1A State Tournament Friday and Saturday at Redbird Arena in Normal. The Bulldogs will meet Galena at 10:30 a.m. In the opener, Hartsburg-Emden will take on Cissna Park Co-op at 9 a.m. The winners advance to the state championship Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with the losers dropping into the third place match at 9 a.m.

Galana beat Elgin Harvest Christian Academy, 25-20, 25-12 to win the Pecatonica Super-Sectional.

Hartsburg-Emden won the Bushnell-Prairie City Super-sectional over Annawan, 25-17, 15-25, 25-19 whlel Cissna Park Co-op beat Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg to win the Milford Super-sectional.

Ticket information for Bulldogs fans are: All match times are estimates. Matches will be played continuously. Tickets may be purchased online at GoRedbirds.com/tickets. Tickets are $8 and there may be a convenience fee that the Illinois High School Association has no control over. Tickets also will be available at the door at Redbird Arena.

At Milford

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg's outstanding season came to a close in a tough match at the Class 1A Milford Super-sectional Friday.

The Hatchets took on Cissna Park and fell in the opening set 25-16. But WSS came back to take the second set, 25-19. Cissna Park then captured the final tough match over WSS, 28-26.

"I'm heartbroken," said WSS Coach Ronda Schlechte. "We were so close. The girls played a heck of a game and I'm so very proud of them. We loved having all the support from our fans tonight. You guys are awesome. You kept us up when we got down and we truly appreciate you.

"We will miss having our seniors on the court next year. They have been a huge part of our success the last several years. They include Halle Moomaw, Ella Kinkelaar, Gabby Vonderheide, Anna Albert and Ainslie Eident. we love you and wish you the best."

Moomaw led the Hatchets in aces with three, two blocked shots and three block assists. She also had 10 kills. Vonderheide led in kills with 14 and had 10 digs. Kinley Quast had 10 digs. Kinkelaar led in assists with 27 and had three block assists.

Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg finished the season with an outstanding 34-6 record.
