St. Elmo/Brownstown Wins EIC Volleyball Tourney

St. Elmo/Brownstown captured the championship of the Egyptian-Illini Conference Volleyball Tournament Thursday.

SEB won the opener over Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City 26-24. But the Bobcats came back to take the second set, 25-13.

SEB then went 26-24 to claim the final set and the championship.

CHBC was led by Karlee Smith with three aces and three blocks, Birgen Schlanser with 23 digs, Marissa Summers with 13 assists and Kyleigh Wallace with six kills.

In the third place match, Ramsey was a winner over Mulberry Grove, 25-23, 25-11.

The fifth place contest went to Patoka/Odin over Martinsville, 14-25, 25-17, 28-26.

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City -- Smith, 3 kills, 3 aces, 3 blocks, 4 digs; Miller, 3 kills, 17 digs; Summers, 2 kills, 1 ace, 13 assists, 1 block, 8 digs; Rodman, 1 kill, 10 digs; Schlanser, 23 digs; Wallace, 6 kills, 1 ace; Arnett, 1 ace, 14 digs

 

At Paris

Newton High School claimed both the junior varsity and varsity matches over Paris Thursday.

In varsity play, the Eagles were 25-8, 25-18 winners. Martin and Zumbahlen led in kills with five each. Schafer had 10 assists. Kessler picked up one block. Bennett led in digs with seven.

The Eagles are now 21-4 and finished as the Little illini Conference co-champions.

Newton will be back in action Monday at the Lawrenceville Regional taking on Marshall at 7 p.m.

At Paris

Newton -- Martin, 5 kills, 1 assist, 4 digs; Zumbahlen, 5 kills, 3 digs; Kessler, 4 kills, 1 block; Frichtl, 4 kills, 3 digs; Schafer, 3 kills, 10 assists, 5 digs; Meinhart, 1 kill; Bierman, 1 kill; Mahaffey, 8 assists, 4 digs; Bennett, 2 assists, 7 digs; Stanley, 2 digs

 

At Louisville

North Clay/Clay City defeated Centralia Christ Our Rock Lutheran Thursday.

The Cardinals were winners 25-20, 25-22 to improve to 27-8 on the season.

In junior varsity play, North Clay/Clay City won 25-23, 25-22 and also nabbed the freshman/sophomore match, 25-12, 25-21.

North Clay/Clay City will be back in action Wednesday at the Class 1A St. Elmo/Brownstown Regional.
