St. A Advances At NTC VB Tourney; EHS Falls, Newton Wins In Regular Season

Effingham St. Anthony High School picked up two victories in the National Trail Conference Volleyball Tournament Thursday to advance to Gold Flight play.

The Bulldogs defeated Neoga, 25-8, 25-9 and won over Dieterich, 25-17, 25-20. St. Anthony will now play Saturday at 5 p.m.

Neoga handed Dieterich a loss in a tough-fought contest. The Maroons won the opener, 25-21. But Neoga came back with 29-27, 25-18 scores for the match.

Neoga will be playing Saturday in Silver Flight play at 2 p.m.

Dieterich drops into the Bronze Flight and will play a 9 a.m. Saturday contest.

Tonight's matches feature Windsor/Stew-Stras against St. Elmo/Brownstown at 5 p.m. at the Enlow Center while Altamont takes on SEB at 6 and WSS meets Altamont at 7.

At Goff Gym, North Clay (Louisville) meets Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City at 5 followed by South Central against CHBC at 6 and North Clay takes on South Central at 7.

Satuday's finals will be played at the Enlow Center.

 

At Mahomet

Mahomet-Seymour picked up an Apollo Conference win over Effingham Thursday evening.

The Bulldogs won 25-15, 25-14.

Effingham was led by Bella Austin with six kills, two aces and four digs while Hannah Thompson had seven assists and Sidney Donaldson and Hannah Thompson a block each.

The Hearts finished third in the conference and stands at 20-9 on the season.

Mahomet-Seymour also captured the junior varsity match, 25-20, 25-17.

EHS was led by Alyssa Martin with six kills, Cami Burgholzer with 11 assists, Reaghan Delong with two aces and two blocks and Averie Wolfe with 12 digs.

Mahomet-Seymour also won the freshman/sophomore match, 25-20, 25-17.

The Hearts return to action Saturday in the Edwards County (Albion) Tournament. EHS will start the tournament on Court 4 against Robinson at 10 a.m. and against Fairfield JV at 11.

Effingham will celebrate Senior Night Tuesday playing host to Mattoon.

At Newton

Newton swept through all three matches for victories over Richland County (Olney) Thursday.

In varsity play, the Eagles were 25-19, 25-16 winners and improved to 17-11 on the season.

Zumbahlen led in kills with nine while Schafer had 11 assists, Kessler two blocks and Bennett, Martin and Zumbahlen two aces each.

In junior varsity action, Newton won 25-18, 25-10.

The freshmen also claimed a victory, 25-17, 25-22.

Newton is back in action Saturday at the Edwards County (Albion) Tournament. The Eagles will meet Carmi-White County at 10 a.m. on Court 3 and then take on Charleston at 11.
