Coach Ronda Schlechte and the Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg volleyball squad finished third at the Class 1A State Tournament Saturday.

NORMAL -- Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg High School came through with a third place finish at the Class 1A State Volleyball Tournament Saturday.

The Hatchets opened with a 25-15 victory over Norris City-Omaha-Enfield in the opening set but struggled in the second set before pulling out a 26-24 victory for the match.

WSS was behind 24-22 in the second set but a kill by Megan Schlechte pulled the squad within 24-23. A block pushed the Hatchets into a 24-24 tie with NCOE. Kasey Bean banged home a kill and the Hatchets moved ahead 25-24 and a kill by Schlechte ended the game in their favor for the match.

Leading WSS in the victory were M. Schlechte with 15 kills, Becca Schlechte with 29 assists and 12 digs, Mackenzi Tabbert with two aces and Carson Cole with two aces.

The Hatchets finished the season with a 35-6 record and were welcomed home with a ceremony Saturday evening.

Members of the team were Maria Gentry, Mikayla Haddock, Kasey Bean, Carson Cole, Rebecca Schlechte, Mackenzi Tabbert, Mackenzie Brown, Claire Moomaw, Megan Schlechte, Jacelyn Schultz, Taylor Rentfro and Calla Roney.

Winning the state championship was Sciota West Prairie who lose the opener to Lanark Eastland 28-26 but came back with 25-21, 25-21 wins for the title.
