Newton, Stew-Stras Fall In Volleyball Sectionals

FLORA -- Newton High School saw its season come to an end in the Class 2A Flora Volleyball Sectional Tuesday evening.

The Eagles went up against Edwards County (Albion) and fell in two games, 25-20, 25-14. Litzelman led the Eagles in kills with seven and blocks with three. Cohorst led in digs with four. Kline had three aces. Koebele led in assists with 14.

Newton finishes the season with a 22-11 record.

Kansas Tri-County captured the second match over Anna-Jonesboro. Tri-County won the opener 25-20 before Anna-Jonesboro came back with a 26-24 count. Tri-County then claimed the match 25-11 to improve to 21-14 on the season.

Edwards County will meet Tri-County at 6 p.m. Thursday for the sectional championship.

Class 1A Chrisman Sectional

Stewardson-Strasburg went up against Danville Schlarman in the second match Tuesday at the Chrisman Sectional and fell, 25-12, 25-20.

The Comets were led by Kendall Knop with four assists, Becca Schlechte with seven kills and nine digs and Maria Gentry with three aces. Stew-Stras ends the season with a 22-15 record. The Comets won the National  Trail Conference Tournament and were co-champions in the NTC during the regular season.

"We didn't have the outcome we had hoped for but all good things must come to an end," said Stew-Stras Coach Ronda Schlechte. "I'm so proud of the girls this season for all their accomplishments. I wish we could have played better tonight but they were able to shut down our hitters and didn't give us many open options to put the ball down.

"We will miss our seniors and wish them the best with their future plans. We would like to thank all our fans for their support throughout our season and especially for making the drive tonight to cheer us on."

In the opening match, Mount Pulaski defeated Farmer City-Blue Ridge 25-23, 25-23.

Mount Pulaski (26-12) will meet Danville Schlarman (27-5-1) at 6 p.m. Thursday for the sectional title.
