EHS Fifth At Mattoon, N.C., Dieterich at Flora Boys Track Meets

MATTOON -- Effingham High School finished fifth out of 13 teams at the Mattoon Boys Track Invitational Thursday.

Mount Zion won the meet with 72 points followed by Danville 67.5, Charleston 43, Decatur MacArthur 41, Effingham 39, Champaign Central 36, Newton 34, Richland County 32, Mattoon 32, Urbana 28, Decatur Eisenhower 26, Robinson 12 and Teutopolis 2.5.

The Hearts had one first place finish. The 3200 relay team claimed the top spot in 8:29.69 minutes. Members of the team were Alex Gordon, Gage Kinder, Adam Flack and Sam Spicer.

Charlie Ring finished third for the Hearts in the shot with a throw of 45 feet, 3 inches and Blayne Ring was third in the discus with a throw of 135-1/2. Aaron Hill was fourth in the 800 in 2:08.23 minutes, Flack finished fourth in the 800 in 2:08.23 minutes and Jacob Weaver was fourth in the pole vault at 12 feet.

Newton had two first place finishes. Parker Wolf won the 400 in 50.13 seconds while Wade Wickham took first in the pole vault at 12-6. Evan Baltzell was third in the 300 hurdles in 43.0 seconds. the Eagles' 3200 relay team was fourth in 8:41.36.

Teutopolis' top finisher was Brant Niebrugge, fifth in the pole vault at 12 feet.

At Flora

Dieterich and North Clay (Louisville) competed in the Flora Boys Invitational.

Carmi-White County won with 178 points followed by Fairfield 162, Flora 97, Mount Carmel 61, North Clay 20 and Dieterich 12.

Mason Byers took second place in the 400 in 52.85, setting a new school record. He finished sixth in the 100 in 11.81, which is also a new school record.

Zane Groves was third in the 1600 in 5:09.93 minutes and Cooper Givens was fourth in the 800 in 2:25.00.

Other finishes were Aren Yakut ninth in the 100 in 12.47, Wyatt Pritchard seventh in 200 in 27.75 and ninth in the 400 in 1:04.50. Michael Teague was 11th in the 400 in 1:09.58 and Nathan Biadzca was 12th in the 1600 in 7:56.41.

Dieterich's Trevor Crutcher won the 1600 in 4:59.56 minutes. Crutcher also was fifth in the long jump at 16-9 and 10th in the 100 in 12.87.
