Daniil Medvedev took over the Number 1 spot as the world’s top men's tennis player Thursday, reaching it when a loss by Novak Djokovic at the Dubai Championships dropped him to second place.

The accomplishment by Medvedev, who is Russian, happened on the same day as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and when asked about it, the 26-year-old said, “By being a tennis player, I want to promote peace all over the world. We play in so many different countries; I’ve been in so many countries . . . I’m all for peace.”
