Roger Federer won his first-round match at the French Open Monday, the eighth-ranked player appearing in his first major tournament in 16 months after two operations on his knee last year.

Seventh-seeded Serena Williams also won her first-round match, as did second-seeded men’s player Daniil Medvedev and reigning women’s champ Iga Swiatek.

Osaka Withdraws From French Open

Naomi Osaka, the world’s Number Two-ranked women’s tennis player, withdrew from the French Open Monday and said she will be taking a break from competition. This happened one day after the 23-year-old who plays for Japan was fined $15,000 for not showing up for the news conference after she won her first-round match.

Osaka said last week she wouldn’t be doing any of the required news media events, citing protection of her mental health. She said Monday she has had “long bouts of depression” since the 2018 U.S. Open and has “huge waves of anxiety” before speaking to the media.
