Maria Sharapova announced her retirement from tennis Wednesday, the 32-year-old Russian player ending a career in which she won five Grand Slam tournaments and was for a time ranked Number One in the world. In an essay for ‘Vanity Fair’ and ‘Vogue’ about her decision to retire that was posted online, Sharapova wrote about the persistent pain in her shoulder, saying, “My body had become a distraction.”
