St. A, CHBC, S. Central Advance In Softball Regional Play, EHS Edges Mount Vernon

Effingham St. Anthony opened with an easy 17-2 victory over Sullivan in the Class 2A St. Anthony Softball Regional Tuesday.

The Bulldogs ripped out to an 11-1 opening inning lead, tacked on a single run in the third and ended the contest in the fourth with five more runs.

St. Anthony finished with 17 hits in the contest. Sidney Kibler led the way with two singles, a double and two RBI while Julia Schultz added a double and triple. Laney Coffin had two singles and brought home five runs. Lily Gannaway added a single, double and an RBI while Hailey Niebrugge had two singles and drove in two runs. Stacie Vonderheide and Abbie Hatton had two singles and an RBI each. Addie Wernsing finished with a double and two RBI. Maddie Kibler added an RBI.

S. Kibler went two innings for the win on the mound. She gave up two runs on four hits and didn't allow a walk. Wernsing came on to finish the final two innings, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out three.

Regional play continues today as Teutopolis faces Pana at 4 p.m.

St. Anthony advanced to the championship game Friday at 4 p.m. and will face either Teutopolis or Pana.

Class 1A Casey-Westfield Regional

Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City handed Neoga a 12-2 loss in the opening game of the Casey-Westfield Regional Tuesday.

Marissa Summers threw a no-hitter for the winners. She allowed two runs on no hits, five strikeouts and walked nine.

The Bobcats took a 3-1 opening inning lead then had a seven-run third and finished the game via the 10-run rule in the sixth.

Ryleigh Sarver led the way offensively for CHBC with three singles, a double and three RBI. Lena Bowlin added three singles and two RBI while Ruby Stuckemeyer had two singles and two RBI. Summers finished with a double and two RBI. Kenna Roley added a single and two RBI while Macee Rodman had two singles and Birgen Schlanser a single and an RBI.

CHBC advances to face Casey-Westfield today at 4:30 p.m. In the second contest, Moweaqua Central A&M will meet Martinsville at 6:30.

Class 1A South Central Regional

South Central moved on in its own regional Tuesday.

The Cougars handed St. Elmo/Brownstown a 15-1 loss.

In the second game, Red Hill (Bridgeport) ended North Clay/Clay City's season, 11-10. North Clay/Clay City finished its season with a 3-12 record.

South Central will now meet Red Hill (Bridgeport) at 4 p.m. Friday for the regional championship.

 

Class 2A St. Joseph-Ogden Regional

St. Joseph-Ogden handed Cumberland a 4-0 loss in its own regional Tuesday.

Today's game features Tolono Unity against Monticello at 4:30 p.m.

St. Joseph-Ogden will meet the winner of that contest at 11 a.m. Saturday for the regional championship.

 

At Effingham

In a regular season contest, Effingham High School edged Mount Vernon, 5-4 Tuesday.

Mount Vernon pulled within 2-1 in the top of the fifth but the Hearts tallied a run in the bottom of the frame to lead 3-1. Mount Vernon then pushed into the lead with a three-run top of the seventh, 4-3.

But the Hearts came back to score two runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim the 5-4 win.

EHS had seven hits led by Natalie Armstrong with a home run and two RBI, Raegan Boone with a single, double, triple and an RBI and Saige Althoff with two singles.

Althoff picked up the pitching victory, going all seven innings, giving up four runs on six hits, two walks while striking out seven.

The Hearts don't return to action until Tuesday in the Class 3A Highland Regional. EHS will meet Highland at 4:30 p.m.
