EHS Splits Victories, H.S. Softball Roundup

Effingham played host to Flora and Pinckneyville Saturday in high school softball and split victories with the two teams Friday.

The Hearts won over Flora 3-2 in nine innings. The Wolves took a 1-0 lead in the sixth and Effingham tied in the bottom of the seventh.

Flora moved ahead 2-1 in the top of the ninth, but once again, the Hearts rallied with two runs for the victory.

EHS had five hits led by Sidney Donaldson and Mya Harvey with a double each. Ryley Engel and Gieah Schlanser had a single and an RBI each.

Saige Althoff went the whole nine innings, allowing two runs on three hits, five walks while striking out six.

In the second contest, Pinckneyville was a 9-4 winner behind a 10-hit attack.

The two teams were tied at 1-1 after three innings and 4-4 after four. But Pinckneyville moved into an 8-4 lead in the fifth and tacked on a final run in the seventh.

Effingham had six hits led by Raegan Boone with two singles and an RBI, Jerzi Bierman with a single and double and Harvey with a double. Donaldson added a single and an RBI.

At Casey

Teutopolis and Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg competed in the Casey-Westfield Round Robin Saturday.

The Wooden Shoes handed Windsor/Stewardson-Strasburg an 11-5 loss behind a 14 hit attack.

Windsor/Stew-Stras held a 4-3 lead after four innings but T-town got untracked with two runs in the fifth and finished with six in the sixth.

Malea Helmink and Hoene had a single, triple and an RBI each for the Shoes. Summer Wall had two singles and two RBI, Olivia Wermert three singles and three RBI, Olivia Copple two singles, a double and an RBI and Mallory Bloemer a double.

Olivia Hemmen went all seven innings allowing five runs on 11 hits, two walks and two strikeouts.

Windsor/Stew-Stras was led by Ella Kinkelaar with a single and three RBI, Samantha Hayes with two singles and an RBI and Cameron Carey and Clarissa Johnson with a single and an RBI each.

Teutopolis fell to Westville by a 5-4 count.

The two teams were tied at 2-2 after the first and 3-3 after the second. Westville moved ahead 5-3 in the third. T-town came back with a run in the fourth only to fall short.

Malea Helmink had a double and an RBI for the Shoes while Chloe Hoene had a single and an RBI and Olivia Copple two singles.

Windsor/Stew-Stras handily beat Westville 13-3. Windsor/Stew-Stras trailed Westville 3-2 after the second then broke loose with 10 runs in the third.

S. Hayes had a single, double, triple and three RBI while Erin Althoff added a single, double and two RBI. Mya Friese had two singles and two RBI. and Alaira Friese a single and an RBI.

Windsor/Stew-Stras then fell to Breese Mater Dei, 5-4 despite having a 10-6 hitting count.

The two teams were tied at 1-1 after three innings. Mater Dei then tallied two runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. The Hatchets came back with three runs in the top of the seventh but couldn't make up that four-run deficit.

Windsor/Stew-Stras had 10 hits led by Ellie Wittenberg with three singles and an RBI and Clarissa Johnson with two singles and two RBI.

In a Friday contest, Newton fell to Mount Carmel by a 12-10 count. The two teams combined for 30 hits.

Newton had 14 of those hits led by Audrie Reich with a double, home run and two RBI, Allie Hermann a single, home run and two RBI. Sally Mahaffey a single, home run and two RBI, Lilly  Kessler two singles and a double, Allie Stanley a home run and three RBI and Lexie Grove two singles

Mount Carmel led 9-3 after four innings then held off a five-run challenge in the seventh for the win.

In Saturday action at Tolono Unity, the homestanding team, blanked Newton 5-0.

Tolono Unity took a 3-0 second inning lead and tacked on single runs in the fourth and sixth. The winners had 10 hits while Newton had six.

The Eagles were led by Lilly Kessler with two singles.

Newton then pounded Decatur St. Teresa, 17-0 in four innings.

Newton had 13 hits led by Mahaffey with a single, two doubles and three RBI, Grove with three singles and three RBI, Reich with two singles and three RBI, Bailee Frichtl with two singles and an RBI, Allie Hermann with a double and Kessler with a single and two RBI.

Amelia Collins was the winning pitcher going one inning, alloowing no hits, no walks and striking out two. Karly Deckard came on to finish the final three innings, allowing two hits and striking out five.

At St. Elmo

St. Elmo/Brownstown picked up only one victory at the Egyptian-Illini Conference Tournament and suffered two losses Saturday.

In the first contest, Ramsey was a 10-7 winner over SEB. Ramsey stepped out to a 2-1 opening inning lead and led 7-2 after three.

St. Elmo/Brownstown had 11 hits led by Daisy Chandler with three singles, Kelly Moss with a single, double and two RBI, Taylor Claycomb with a single, double and one RBI and Alivia Claycomb with a double and two RBI.

St. Elmo/Brownstown then fell to Mulberry Grove 12-0 in the contest contest. SEB had only one hit, a single by A. Claycomb.

SEB then downed Martinsville, 10-8.

Martinsville held a 3-0 lead after two innings but SEB tied in the top of the third. Martinsville regained the lead 4-3 in the bottom of the third and led 6-3 after four.  St. Elmo/Brownstown then broke loose with a seven run third and tallied a 10-8 victory.

SEB had 13 hits led by Chandler with three singles and two RBI, Jayna Ireland with a single and double, Macey Sapp with two singles and two RBI, A. Claycomb with a double and two RBI and Leila Wright with a single and an RBI.
