Effingham Wins Three, Area Softball Roundup

Effingham High School picked up three victories during the weekend in softball competition.

The Hearts won Friday over Champaign Central, 11-5 behind a 19-hit attack.

Of those 19 hits, eight were for extra bases. Natalie Armstrong, Sidney Donaldson and Ryley Engel led the way. Armstrong had a double, home run and two RBI while Donaldson had two singles, two triples and two RBI and Ryley Engel two singles, two doubles and an RBI. Saige Althoff added a single, triple and an RBI. Jerzi Bierman and Mya Harvey had two singles and an RBI each. Raegan Boone added two singles and Madi Kirk had a triple and an RBI.

Armstrong went three innings for the Hearts but left as the two teams were tied at 5-5. Althoff came on for the victory on the mound, going four innings allowing no runs on three hits, one walk and striking out three.

The Hearts broke a 5-5 tie with a run in the fourth then tacked on three in the sixth and two in the seventh.

Effingham came back Saturday to sweep an Apollo Conference doubleheader over Mattoon.

The Hearts won the opener 11-8 as they continued pounding the softball with 15 hits.

EHS trailed 3-1 after the first inning and 5-4 after two. But EHS took the lead with a 6-3 third inning and tacked on a final run in the sixth.

Donaldson had two singles, a double and three RBI while Boone had three singles and two RBI and Engel three singles and an RBI. Harvey had two singles and an RBI and Bierman two singles. Alyssa Martin added a single and an RBI.

Althoff went the distance allowing eight runs on 11 hits, five walks and striking out five.

In the second contest, EHS continued its hot hitting with 14. EHS took a 2-0 first inning lead and never looked back in the 9-1 win.

Donaldson had three doubles and an RBI while Bierman and Armstrong had two singles and an RBI each. Engel and Bria Beals had two singles and two RBI each. Althoff finished with a double and Boone and Harvey had a single and an RBI each. 

Armstrong went the distance, allowing one run on nine hits, two walks and striking out four.

At Bradley

Effingham St. Anthony fell in a doubleheader to Bradley Bourbonnais Saturday.

The Bulldogs lost two close contests. In the opener, Bradley was a 3-2 winner. Bradley took a 2-0 opening inning lead and tacked on one in the second. The Bulldogs came back with a run in the fourth and one in the sixth only to fall short.

St. Anthony had five hits led by Sydney Kibler with a single, home run and two RBI and Hailey Niebrugge, Abbie Hatton and Stacie Vonderheide with a dobule each.

Bradley Burbonnais had six hits.

in the second contest, Bradley Bourbonnais scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to capture the 1-0 victory.

St. Anthony outhit Bourbonnais by a 7-5 count. Neither team had an error.

Niebrugge had a double while Addie Wernsing had two singles.

Wernsing took the tough-luck loss, going 6.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits, one walk while striking out two.

At Tolono

Teutopolis fell to two different teams at Tolono Unity Saturday.

Quincy Notre Dame was a 13-4 winner. Notre Dame took a 2-0 opening inning lead then had a nine-run second and finished with two in the sixth.

T-town had eight hits in the game but committed four errors and gave up nine walks.

Chloe Hoene had a double and triple while Olivia Copple had a single, triple and an RBI. Malea Helink added a single and three RBI.

In the second contest, Tolono Unity was a 10-2 winner over the Shoes.

Unity held a 5-0 opening inning lead and never looked back. The winners had a 10-hit attack.

T-town finished with seven hits led by Summer Wall and Kayleigh Zerrusen with a double each. Zerrusen added an RBI.

At Dieterich

Dieterich claimed one victory and suffered two losses at the Casey-Westfield Tournament Saturday.

The lone victory came over Georgetown-Ridge Farm by a 19-7 count. The Maroons ran out to a 13-0 opening inning lead and added on three in the second and three in the fourth.

Dieterich had 15 hits, eight of those for extra bases. Kinli Michl had three singles, a double and two RBI, E. Meinhart a single, double and two RBI, Callie Faller a single, double and one RBI, Ella Kreke a triple, E. Meinhart a double and two RBI,  Lucie Jansen, Kinley Will and Sammi Goebel a double and an RBI each and E. Meinhart and Ruby Westendorf a single and two RBI each.

In the second contest, Tri-County edged Dieterich, 4-3. Dieterich held a 2-0 lead and led 3-0 after five innings. But Tri-County came back to knot the score in the sixth and won with a run in the seventh.

Dieterich outhit Tri-County by an 8-6 count. Jansen had a single and two doubles while Faller had a double and an RBI.

Casey-Westfield captured a 12-2 win over Dieterich in five innings via the 10-run rule.

The Warriors ran out to a 6-0 lead after two innings. Dieterich tallied two in the top of the third but Casey-Westfield went on to end the game in the fifth.

E. Meinhart had a single and drove in both runs for Dieterich.
